A federal judge sentenced the last of four men convicted in the robbery and shooting of a postal carrier in Oakland to 14 years in prison Friday.
Gerard Hood, 24, punched postal employee Harjit Singh Surajbansi at 57th and Genoa streets in North Oakland on Nov. 10, 2004. Three other men -- Lawrence Fleming, 22, Erique Dunte Dixon, 19, and Ruben Cannon, 19 -- received sentences ranging from two to eight years in prison.
Surajbansi, a five-year U.S. Postal Service employee, was returning to his truck at about 5 p.m. when he was accosted. Cannon drove a car to the scene. Hood punched the carrier in the face and Fleming shot him in the leg before they fled with the victim's cell phone and between $3 and $12 in cash.
