STOCKTON - It's probably not a good idea to give someone a ride to meet two car thieves.
That might be what the victim of a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard carjacking is thinking today.
He went to a gas station at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday with a man who had been the victim of car theft a day earlier.
The victim of the Tuesday theft found his car for sale on the Internet site Craigslist. Instead of calling police, the man set up an appointment to meet the thieves trying to sell the car.
"Let us make that appointment," said Officer Pete Smith, a spokesman for the Stockton Police Department, adding that the victims seemed to be acting "misguidedly proactive for their own benefit. The greatest asset we have for crime prevention in this city is the citizens. But we would never advocate that a citizen puts them in harm's way."
The victim of the Tuesday theft called the second victim for a ride to the gas station, where the thieves had brought the car for the meeting.
Police said the victim of the initial theft jumped into his car upon arriving and sped away, leaving the man who had brought him to the gas station with the suspects.
The suspects demanded the keys to the second victim's car. Fearing they had a gun, the victim complied. The thieves then drove away in his car.
The victims made "several poor choices in trying to right the wrong," Smith said.
Police have arrested Anthony Sumahit, 43, as part of their investigation.
Forgery arrest: Larry Galicinao, 25, of Stockton was arrested at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday on suspicion of forgery, possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, trespassing and child endangerment. The Police Department reported Galicinao had tried to cash a forged check at Smart Foods, at 3215 Pacific Ave., but fled when he saw police, abandoning a child that had been in his care. Police caught Galicinao on the University of the Pacific campus, but not before he fled into a student dorm.
Assault: A 16-year-old boy told police he was attacked at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 1000 block of South Stanislaus Street. He said four males got out of a red Honda that had pulled up near him. He ran but slipped and fell. One of the four hit the boy over the head with a two-by-four, then all four drove away. They were not described in detail.
