This is a difficult thing to pinpoint becuase technically, "hating" is a slang word coined by the hip-hop community.

However, the root of hating is simply someone knowing they cant do what one person does, so they try and dwarf the persons accomplishments to nothing special in order for them to have some sense of "equalness".

Although I do believe ALL humans are created equal, in the sense that if you have more money or power than me, you are still a human being, having money/power creates status in out society, and dictates importance as well. People are INFATUATED with "being seen", in the effects of other people knowing who they are for some sort of rise in ego...and this goes for both men and women.

The question is, can opposie sex's hate on one another? I have yet to see a guy on here say "Keisha Cole aint shit".

I never use the word 'hating' in conversation.

It has become a ridiculous, cliche ass joke.

Dont wanna give me your number? Why you hatin! Dont want your friend to get popped selling dope? Why you hatin! Dont like your dead frog ass sounding voice? Why you hatin!

I think the hip-hop community supports this idea of a juvenile, self-centered black man who throws a fit every time he doesnt get what he wants and the 'hatin' concept is a manifestation of that.

jealousy motivates you to acquire that which you dont have, talking shit to someone might help you deal with your own inferiority issues, conflict requires the brain to solve problems, the brain is protecting itself, it sees something it desires but cannot acquire, so it solves this potential problem by then convincing itself that it no longer desires it. if it wasnt like this people might be offing themselves left and right.

Is it "hating" to not be able to stand the arrogance of someone? As someone in the business, I see it a lot. Some of the people are doing less than I, some are doing more...but something about the super-arrogance secretly has me awaiting their fall from quasi-fame.

I wonder what the science behind totally unfounded arrogance is? It seems to be getting far worse in these days of the MySpace culture. Now, even the Wells Fargo bank teller Jon has a flier for his "Official Birthday Party". As if there would be an "Unofficial" one thrown. It's obnoxious. I'm totally hating.

Well, I think a lot of people deserve attention and success. I just find that people who are assholes and pricks once they achieve a sliver of fame to be nauseating. I'm not sure if that's my issue, because I do feel a negative vibe toward them, but it's less jealousy and more digust for the cocky behavior.

I don't think it's natural, and I also don't buy that humans are competitive by nature either. I think people "hating" is a result of the world and environment we live in, just like the competitiveness issue. There are many injustices in our world and there is no equality, so the results are a bunch of people fighting with eachother instead of cooperating and helping eachother out. But I do believe people would act differently towards eachother if there wasn't so much inequality and struggle to survive...

Prior to this world and environment, people still fought though...and competed for domination as well. Seems like a natural human instinct?
If you look at indigenous people pre-Columbus in America, you'll see that they lived a life completely different than us and used mutual aid to help eachother out. The members of their communities worked in unity and did not see eachother as competitors. Of course, when it came to other tribes, things are different because they all lived their lives differently and according to their own respective traditions. I just think it's bull shit that people are conditioned to believe that it is natural for humans to compete with eachother on some survival of the fittest type of shit, which helps create the type of world we live in now. Darwin studied animals and the way they have evolved over the years, but animals don't have an advanced mind like humans do and I believe the main reasons we are the "kings of the earth" is because of our ability to cooperate with eachother in the past in order to survive.

I believe it is more evolutionary advanced for humans to act in cooperation and aiding eachother rather than competing against eachother.

What about other tribes? Didnt they try and conquer territory of other indians? Ti may have nothing to do with ego, but everything to do with territorial instinct. TO say there was no fighting or desire to have more than what everyone else feels is "good enough" is a fallacy.

@WD

NPR is on the fuckin nose about that 1000%.

This is absolutely true, great post. Conditions determine consciousness. Selfishness, greed, (Haterism) etc. are things we are taught and is a reflection of society (in particular, capitalist societies). These are the values of a capitalist society and they truly aren't human nature, these are things we have been conditioned to think. Or in Marx's explanation - it's a form of false consciousness.
