He'd be a nice practice player early on until he gets cut, but I'd rather have KP sign Koponen and deal Sergio (who just lost his spot on the Spanish national team to a 17 year old) in a Raef trade.

Oh, and Rudy is doing pretty good in the Olympics. Spain has a lot of NBA players, they could probably get silver.

Medal favorite Spain takes down Greece

BEIJING (AP) - Portland's Rudy Fernandez scored a game-high 16 points and Pau Gasol added 11 to send Spain to an 81-66 win over Greece Sunday in the Olympics opener for both teams.

In a rematch of the 2006 World Championship title game, which Spain won 70-47, was close through the second quarter. But Spain opened up a 16-point lead in the third period, 62-46, quieting the singing, bass drum-banging Greek fans who brought a little atmosphere to the 18,000-seat Beijing Olympic Basketball Stadium.

Greece could get no closer than 10 points the rest of the game and Spain held on the for comfortable win.

With former International Olympic Committee President Juan-Antonio Samaranch and tennis great Rafael Nadal watching from the stands, Toronto Raptors guard Jose Calderon shot 63 percent from the field and finished with 13 points. Vasileios Vasileios Spanoulis led Greece with 15 points.

In the Olympic tournament's opening game, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-born Robert Holden scored a game-high 19 points to lead European champions Russia to a 71-49 win against Iran. Russia scored 19 unanswered points to take a 24-5 lead against the Asian champions in the first quarter.

Iran fought back and trailed by just eight points at the end of the third quarter. But the Iranian comeback lost steam in the final period as the Russians stretched their lead to a game-high 22 points.

Iran, led by Mohammad Nikkhah with 16 points, committed 22 turnovers.

"We don't have much Olympic experience, but we gradually adapted to their style and played well in the second half," said Iranian center Hamed Ehadadi, who had a game-leading eight rebounds.

Dallas Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki scored 23 points on 78 percent shooting as Germany overwhelmed Olympic rookies Angola 95-66. Los Angeles Clippers' center Christopher Kaman, who received his German citizenship just last month, led Germany with 24 points.

"I think we're a good team. We'll find out just how good on Wednesday, when we play Spain," Kaman said after the game.

http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/2008/08/roy_surgery_update_its_over_an.html

Brandon Roy is out of surgery and the news is good.

Roy will need 4-to-6 weeks to recover from Thursday's arthroscopic knee surgery according to team athletic trainer Jay Jensen. Roy underwent a 20-minute procedure in Vancouver, Wash., during which team physician Don Roberts removed a piece of cartilage that was causing irritation in Roy's left knee.

"He will definitely be playing by the time the season starts,'' Jensen said.

Jensen said Roy will be walking without crutches by next week, when he is expected to return to Portland to begin rehabilitation exercises. The Blazers open training camp on Sept. 29, and Jensen said he plans on "protecting" Roy during the practices and preseason games to ensure he is ready for the team's Oct. 28 opener at the Los Angeles Lakers.

Jensen said there was no specific incident that caused Roy's injury.

"He's just got a basketball player's knee,'' Jensen said.

This is the third knee surgery for a torn meniscus in Roy's career. In 2001, when he was at Garfield High School in Seattle, he had surgery on his left knee. In 2004, when he was a junior at the University of Washington, he had surgery on his right knee.

Blazers offer Outlaw to Bulls
08.26.08 | No Comments

The Portland Trail Blazers are in an intense search to find a point guard, a272891641_7858fe8b52.jpgnd they’re interested in one on the Chicago Bulls. The Blazers have offered Forward Travis Outlaw and Center Joel Przybilla to Bulls in exchange for Kirk Hinrich and possibly a future draft pick. The Bulls are mildly interested in the deal, but are still reluctant to trade Hinrich. The Bulls are trying to see if the Blazers have any interest in Ben Gordon instead, that of course if Gordon is interested in accepting a deal to go to the Blazers. Outlaw, a five year veteran, averaged 13.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game last season. Przybilla, an eight year veteran, averaged 4.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game last season.
