The 209: Rapper finds success with Jackie Chan EP

Taken from 209vibe.com
http://www.209vibe.com/articles/view/121

Jackie Chan has jumped from buildings, crashed through windows and dished out beatings to hundreds of bad guys in his films.

The last thing Okwerdz wants to do is make him angry.

“Jackie Chan, if you’re listening, don’t kick my (butt),” the Stockton rapper pleads on his new release, “The Rush Hour EP.”

Each song was created using beats and samples from Chan movies. It’s an unlikely tribute from a musician who’s followed an unlikely road to rap success.

Born Brian Peeples, Okwerdz is a Stagg High School graduate who has gone from competing in the top rap battles in the United States to becoming a hip-hop star in Australia. He recently earned an Australian gold record for his work on an album by the Hilltop Hoods, an Australian group.

Okwerdz made a surprise appearance at one of the act’s concerts Down Under and performed with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in front of more than 7,000 fans.

“It was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever done,” he said. Australians “just really love hip-hop.”

“The Rush Hour EP,” meanwhile, has been gaining attention stateside. It’s been downloaded more than 31,000 times since it was made available for free on his Web site. Okwerdz is giving the album away in part to avoid any legal issues that would stem from him financially benefitting from Chan’s work.

“The Rush Hour EP” is rhythmic and aggressive, like the culminating fight in a martial-artist movie. Okwerdz has a breathless, slightly nasal tone that adds a sense of urgency to the boasts he spits in time to the beat.

“Critics/you’re long gone, finish ya/this ain’t a rap song/this is Hong Kong cinema,” he rhymes on “Armour of God.” On “First Strike,” he notes, “Guess you can say I’m a fan, big time... I’ve done met Jackie Chan, six times!”

“I’ve always been a big Jackie Chan fan,” added Okwerdz, 24. He’s collected as many as 70 of Chan’s films and enjoys their soundtracks. The music “always went well with the fight scenes, and it sounded great,” he said.

When he was in his early teens, Okwerdz learned that the Jackie Chan fan club was offering members a chance to fly to Hong Kong, meet the martial-arts star and attend an exhibit of memorabilia from his films. Cost: $1,200.

“I worked at my mom’s restaurant all summer so I could do it,” he said. Meeting Chan that year was an incredible experience.

“Imagine meeting your idol, someone you grew up watching,” Okwerdz said. “The dude is an amazing person.”
