BRUUUUUUUCE!!

Raiders follow their (expletive) leader

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, December 6th, 2009 at 5:39 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Great story relayed by left tackle Mario Henderson in talking with reporters after the game.

On the Raiders final drive, Henderson looked up at the big screen to see how he had carried out his assignment on the previous play.

Big mistake.

“Bruce was like, `Stop (bleeping) looking at that thing and get your mind right,’ ” Henderson said. “I looked at him like, `You talkin’ to me?’ . . . I was like, `OK, you’re right. You’re right. You the man. You the man.’ ”

Langston Walker, who said he hadn’t lined up at guard since the night in 2003 when Brett Favre lit up the Raiders on Monday NIght football, said his first time on the field with Gradkowski was impressive.

“Bruce is fiery,” Walker said. “He’s yelling at us, screaming at us, running around like a banshee, but it’s all controlled. That’s how he gets it done. You saw the result.”

Added Cornell Green: “Bruce had something about him today. I don’t know if it was being home or just letting it all hang out, but he took control of the huddle. He’s cursing at people to hurry up. He brings that to the team. He brings that fire and that’s good.”

Gradkowski said it’s all part of the job description.

“When I am out there, when I am at practice, it is my offense and that is how I’m going to lead,” Gradkowski said.

hopefully we can build on this breakout game offensively. Some things still leave me wondering what is going on with the personell decisions throughout the game though.

We have a fullback returning kickoffs! WTF?

third and one and we have mcfadden running in between the tackles leaving bush on the sidelines. WTF?

we already know who is behind DHB's playing time. today proved he doesn't deserve to be on the field as much as he is, YET. keeping our better options beached does not help this team.

i would like to see mcfadden used a returner. DHB as the other returner.

The salary of these young players ruin the game. Hopefully we play our best players regardless of their salary in the future. just win baby, right?

your last 4 games all look winnable, finishing 8-8 would be something considering the horrible start

Just got the word I'll be returning kicks for the rest of the season. I run like 5.8 40 and weigh 315 lbs but the organization felt like I was the best choice. So Im gonna do what I can for the team and try to get past the 40 yard line for the first time all season next week against the Redskins

Darrius Heyward-Bey (foot) was still in a protective walking boot Monday after missing the Raiders' Week 13 win over Pittsburgh.
As Gregg Rosenthal pointed out on Twitter Sunday night, Heyward-Bey probably deserved a game ball after the win for getting hurt in practice so Tom Cable had to play Louis Murphy. Murphy, of course, abused Ike Taylor and company for 128 yards and two scores. DHB's status for Week 14 is unclear.

JaMarcus Russell said Thursday that he would be opposed to restructuring his contract this offseason.
"That's over and done with," said Russell. "I don't even consider that as a part of it." Russell also said he would "work [his] butt off" if he's forced to battle for the starting job next season, though we can't imagine him beating out a legit NFL QB if he can't keep Bruce Gradkowski on the bench.

Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell reveals he was surprised by benching
By Steve Corkran
Oakland Tribune

Updated: 12/10/2009 07:56:39 PM PST

JaMarcus Russell said he was surprised coach Tom Cable benched him four games ago and called it embarrassing and unwarranted. He promised a "totally different JaMarcus" upon his return.

Russell spoke with the media Thursday for the first time since Nov. 15, the day he was replaced by Bruce Gradkowski late in the third quarter in a 16-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

"It's not the end of the world," Russell said of his situation. "There's better days to come. Just move on from it."

The Raiders are 2-1 with Gradkowski as the starter and Russell waiting for another opportunity to validate Oakland's selection of him with the first pick in the 2007 NFL draft.

Cable has made it clear Gradkowski will start for the rest of the season because, in the coach's words, he gives the Raiders the best chance to win.

Russell said the benching surprised him.

"At first, it was very embarrassing to get pulled out," he said. "I think that would be for anybody."

Asked if he deserved the demotion, Russell said: "I wouldn't say that. ... But I guess coach wanted to go in a different direction."

After the season, the Raiders will be forced to decide whether to re-sign Gradkowski, draft another quarterback or target a signal-caller in free agency. Gradkowski is playing out a one-year contract that pays him $535,000.

As for Russell, he is due a base salary of $9.45 million next season. Russell, 24, said he isn't interested in restructuring his contract.

"Oh, no," Russell said when asked if he would consider reworking the six-year deal he signed his rookie season. "That's over and done with. I don't even consider that as a part of it."

Russell said he considers himself the Raiders quarterback of the future, though he is supportive of Gradkowski for the time being.

The Raiders never imagined they would be at a crossroads with Russell only three years into his NFL career. But Russell's development has been slower than expected.

"He's got to understand the responsibility that comes with that position," Cable said at the time of Russell's benching. "You can't go out time and time again and consistently be that inaccurate, not have command like you need to in this league. That's a very critical position in the National Football League."

Russell has completed 46.8 percent of his passes and has a 47.7 passer rating this season, both league-worsts. Gradkowski has a 54.5 completion percentage and an 80.2 passer rating.

Russell remains confident in his ability to succeed as an NFL quarterback. He said any questions about his weight and work ethic are unfounded. It all comes down to playing better.

Doing so entails his teammates doing their share, Russell said.

"It's kind of hard because there was times where you try to get guys a chance to make plays, and at the early part of the year, it wasn't happening," Russell said. "So, the quarterback job, I say, he looks for more help around from everybody because he can't do it himself."

Russell started Oakland's first nine games this season. Cable pulled him in the first half against the New York Jets on Oct. 25, then for good against the Chiefs two games later.

It's worth noting Russell played in games in which rookies started at both wide receiver spots. Russell also was on the field while left guard Robert Gallery, running back Darren McFadden and No. 1 receiver Chaz Schilens missed significant playing time.

Gradkowski has had all those players at his disposal during his three starts, though Gallery was hurt against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday and will miss the rest of the season.

"Guys were making plays for him," Russell said of Gradkowski's 308-yard, three-touchdown performance in the 27-24 win at Pittsburgh. "That's what a quarterback needs, his surrounding players."

Cable said he is impressed by the way Russell is handling his demotion.

"He's doing the right things," Cable said. "He's working. He's doing what you should be, preparing himself. But I absolutely feel any competitor or athlete at this level wants the opportunity to go back in there."
# INSIDE Robert Gallery will miss the remainder of the season with a lower back strain. Page 2

Here's the whole Q&A with Russell

Q&A with JaMarcus Russell

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, December 10th, 2009 at 12:40 pm in Oakland Raiders.

A transcript of an interview JaMarcus Russell gave to local reporters, his first comments since being downgraded to backup quarterback in favor of Bruce Gradkowski:

Q: How’s it going?

Russell: Going pretty good, as you could see. We’re doing a lot better on the field. I guess the change was (done) in the correct way. But something to learn from, you know what I mean? When it first happened, wasn’t too happy with it. But the thing is, I look at it, we’re both on the same team, playing under the same roof. So the best thing to me is to be a great team player, great teammate, and the same if I was in there. He’d be doing the same. That’s pretty much my outlook on it.

Q: What was the message you got from this? What areas would the coach like to see improved?

Russell: In every way. You can always improve yourself. Any way, shape, form or fashion, before you point the finger. As long as you’re taking care of business at home, then everything else can be taking place. Right now, I’ve learned from it. Because I’ve done it before. Not from starter to the bench thing, but just about coming into college. I red-shirted my freshman year, so I’ve kind of been in a similar situation. Best thing to learn from is to take it in stride and just keep moving. We all have road bumps in our life and this just happens to be one bump.

Q: Do you think it was deserved?

Russell: I wouldn’t say that. You know, any guy that’s competitive, which we want to be out there, and I’d say that about myself. But I guess coach wanted to go in a different direction.

Q: Do you look at guys like Alex Smith and Vince Young as paths to follow?

Russell: Uhh, you can. I’m pretty sure that those things just ain’t happening. It was something to that, you look like now, guys are making plays. That’s the thing we were lacking. We wasn’t making plays. Now, a few plays have been made.

Q: Do you consider yourself QB of future?

Russell: No doubt. That hasn’t changed in my mind at all.

Q: Would you be open to compete for starting job next year?

Russell: I will work my butt off to be that guy.

Q: But if they ask you to rework your deal?

Russell: Oh, no. That’s over and done with. I don’t even consider that as a part of it.

Q: Talked to Al Davis?

Russell: Oh, yeah. We talk. Both guys have good spirits about it. It’s just something right now that we’re just going through. I don’t see the big deal about it. He’s my teammate. You all acting like I’m going against somebody else. It’s a big deal, but it’s really not.

Q: Do you expect to get more time this season?

Russell: The way things are going right now he’s doing a good job out there. I always prepare like I’m that guy. If my number is called, then I’ll be ready.

Q: What is he doing well?

Russell: Now it’s just all around. Guys are just making plays around him. In the Dallas game after you go out and win in Cincinnati there wasn’t plays really made the whole game, you know what I mean. Going into Pittsburgh, guys were making plays for him. That’s what a quarterback needs, his surrounding players. That’s what was going on.

Q: Will you be a better QB when you do get your chance?

Russell: You can learn a lot from this so yes I do think so.

Q: You getting a lot of support from family, friends, etc.?

Russell: Oh yeah. It’s not the end of the world. There’s better days to come. Just move on from it. I learned from the first game and now I can just be a team player and show my support I have, It’s not like I’m going against somebody else. We’re teammates. Who wouldn’t want to be a starting quarterback of an NFL team. Everybody don’t get the chance or opportunity to play in the NFL or a football game. Why wouldn’t I want that chance?

Q: Do you expect an open competition next year?

Russell: Uh, I’m not sure. If that’s the road they want to take, then, hey, we have to go out and fight our butts off to be that guy.

Q: Anything you want to accomplish in the offseason?

Russell: “Work hard, that’s all the time. You got to do that on your own. That’s going to be part of the workout plan anyway.”

Q: Are your weight and work ethic not an issue, it’s just the on-field performance?

Russell: Yeah, that’s about it.

Q: How would you grade yourself this season?

Russell: Uh, kind of hard because there was times where you try to get guys a chance to make plays and at the early part of the year, it wasn’t happening. So, the quarterback job, I say he looks for more help around from everybody because he can’t do it himself. It wasn’t so well but at times it was. When we look at film, it don’t be as bad as it seems on the field always.

Q: How hard to play without Schilens, McFadden, Gallery, etc. . .

Russell: “Pretty hard but you can’t really base it upon that because you put guys in knowing that they going to go out there and they’ll play the same. So, I wouldn’t really put that on the table.”

Q: Were you surprised when you heard the news that you weren’t starting anymore?

Russell: I really was. I really was. At first, it was very embarrassing to get pulled out. I think that would be for anybody. I kind of took it, sat down and thought about it, just prayed about the situation, and God, he don’t make no mistakes. So, kind of look at it like that.

Q: What’s it like going through this for the first time? Difficult?

Russell: “It was. It really was. Like I said, it’s the first time for me and that’s why I say, it’s not the end of the world. It’s my third year, and I have a lot more football to play.”

Q: What are people going to see when you hit the field again?

Russell: A totally different JaMarcus. People going to have their opinion, and I really don’t pay too much attention to that. I worry about JaMarcus and JaMarcus only.

Q: How will you be different?

Russell: Time will tell. Time will tell. Time will really tell.

NOTE: Players who were not at practice included LG Robert Gallery, WR-KR Nick Miller and WR Darrius Heyward-Bey. DE Greg Ellis was a late arrival but appeared to be a spectator. Samson Satele was practicing with Chris Morris lining up for drills at left guard.

More to come following Tom Cable’s post-practice press briefing . . .

I just saw this on another site... it's from a couple weeks ago... and I dunno if it's true... but lol

Sources close to Raiderfans.net have learned that JaMarcus Russell is hooked on the popular southern drink concoction called "syrup", also known as "sizzurp", "purple juice" or "lean." What is it you ask? It's a combination of Codeine cough syrup and Sprite soda. The cough syrup, when mixed with the clear soda causes the drink to turn a light purple color. The effects can cause one to get high. Sources close to Raiderfans.net have personally seen JaMarcus drink this 'syrup' on numerous occasions!
