Schilens may still be a ways off

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, October 1st, 2009 at 3:44 pm in Oakland Raiders.

News and notes from Thursday’s post-practice press briefing by Raiders coach Tom Cable:

– This is just a hunch, but it’s starting to look as if wide receiver Chaz Schilens (broken left metatarsal) may not be much of a factor next for next week’s game against the New York Jets, let alone Sunday’s road game against the Houston Texans.

Schilens has been out of view of the media ever since the team returned to Alameda, and although Cable has publicly held out hope his best receiver could play against Houston, it doesn’t look like he’s anywhere close to taking the field.

As the Raiders began Friday’s session, Schilens was working along with free safety Hiram Eugene doing some low impact agility exercises. Schilens may join his teammates Friday for some individual drills and do what Cable described as “light work, just kind of introduce him to it.”

Regarding Schilens availability for Sunday, Cable said, “I would say this: it’s doubtful.”

Asked how Schilens would fit in when healthy, Cable said, “I think once he’s back into the routine, absolutely, we need to get him involved. But that may lend itself to a little more three-receiver stuff.”

When quarterback JaMarcus Russell spoke to reporters before practice, it didn’t sound as if he has been throwing to Schilens or even communicating about the particulars of when the receiver would return.

“I don’t know,” Russell said. “I haven’t heard from Chaz as far as his recovery. But I know he’s doing pretty good. He’ll be a big help, and to the young guys, he’ll be a help to them just by letting them know he was young before he’d been in it and go out there and make some plays. It would be good to get him back.”

Since Schilens has done little more than treadmill work after an initial period of inactivity, it’s been six weeks since he really ran and cut on his foot. It could be midseason before we see the Schilens who was so impressive during training camp and caught give passes from Russell in the preseason opener against Dallas.

– One of Darren McFadden’s problems, other than fumbles? The pass isn’t going well enough to set up the run.

“He’s been somewhat productive when it’s been there is the best way to say it,” Cable said. “But again we need to throw the ball in order to have more lanes open up.”

– Houston quarterback Matt Schaub has thrown for 823 yards with a 64.5 percent completion rate with seven touchdown passes and two interceptions through three games, which doesn’t come as a shock to Cable. He was the line coach with the Falcons when Schaub was the backup for Michael Vick.

“We thought he was really good. He was terrific. At that time he was the No. 2 and we thought maybe the best No. 2 in football,” Cable said. “It doesn’t surprise me at all what Matt’s doing.”

– Cable said Thursday was another sharp practice and reiterated his belief the Raiders are nearing a breakthrough game and that the players realize it, but that it’s about time to make it happen.

“Actually, they’re the easiest (to convince) because they can see it,” Cable said. “It’s one thing to say it and then it’s not really there. We had another good day so they can see it because they have seen so much and been here enough.

“They’re really the catalysts for getting it going . . . you have to have the proof at some point.”

– Eugene should get in some work Friday, Cable said, but is still “questionable” and the probability is that Michael Huff will start again at free safety. Huff was limited with rib and quadriceps issues. Cornerback Jonathan Holland was limited (elbow) and could be active as a cornerback though Justin Miller was brought in to return kickoffs.

Holland, although only recently moved to defense, would play ahead of Miller in the secondary, Cable said.

Fullback Luke Lawton sustained a light hamstring strain at the conclusion of the Wednesday practice and was limited Thursday. Cable said he would have a better idea about Lawton’s game availability Friday.

By game’s end, Russell was 18 of 25 for 236 yards and two touchdowns
damn, it's crazy to think week 16 of last season Russell was putting up stats like this

I mean the numbers aren't HUGE... but they're very solid... if he could play like this every week we'd be a very dangerous offense

wtf Russell... get your shit together!

I don't know what's wrong with Russell, he seems to play better when everything is on the line. Too much of a laid back attitude...

lmao at you fools really dreaming about football games...

edit: about the raiders tho, you guys have pretty good D, alot of playmakers...the team isn't as bad as they lookand that is mostly becuase of Russell....dude better step up and start showing some improvements...

I dont think benching JR is an option...he was the number 1 pick with a big contract so I think you let him play out the whole season even if he keeps playing bad because you really want to know what he has and if he can actually improve week in week out...let him have the team a whole season so you know where hes at at the end of the season...then you have a better idea of if you should draft or bring in another qb or not...

Garcia’s miscalculation
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, October 2nd, 2009 at 5:46 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Jeff Garcia explained himself on the syndicated Fox Sports radio show hosted by Chris Myers and Steve Hartman, and while a lot of the problems he identifed with the Raiders have been said elsewhere, it’s not like he came into camp like a force of nature only to be ignored and pushed aside.

Here’s a transcript of what Garcia said.

And here’s what I think about what Garcia said and his brief time with the Raiders.

Garcia never bought in. He looked like he had a case of contract remorse moments after he signed it.

So when Garcia says some of his teammates looked as if they were simply collecting a check, he could count himself in that group because he was never on board.

It seemed strange from the outset that Garcia’s locker was nowhere near Russell’s in Alameda. He was in another area near Darren McFadden and Oren O’Neal, while Russell was out of reach of conversation near Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye.

When the Raiders got to Napa, Garcia did all the requisite interviews about being a competitor but willing to “help out a young guy” and then promptly had a calf injury. It was similar to a calf injury he had the previous year in Tampa Bay, when coincidentally, the Bucs were courting Brett Favre. Not long after the Favre issue was resolved, Garcia was back on the field and helping Tampa win games.

While Garcia was unable to practice, he was still fine to join the quarterbacks during sessions off to the side where quarterbacks coach Paul Hackett went over the finer points of the position. It was at that time where Garcia could bring the level of focus to a new level, challenge Russell along with Hackett, and attempt to push him to greater heights.

It wasn’t possible, because Garcia was seldom there. Hackett would be with Gradkowski and Frye, and Garcia would be elsewhere, and it wasn’t rehabbing because he did most of at different times.

When Garcia walked to and from practice, he looked like a 12-year-old whose dog had run away. When Garcia didn’t return with the team following the Dallas preseason game for “personal issues” I thought he was really considering his future in Oakland. Both Garcia and Cable denied it.

Garcia was out with the calf injury so long he got in only one brief series in the third preseason game and a little more time in the fourth. And it’s not like when he played that Garcia was lighting it up. In fact, Russell had a surge in his play toward the end of camp and looked like he was starting to get it.

When the two quarterbacks were on the field at the same time in Tampa Bay the previous year, it was Russell who walked off the field with the win and Garcia who threw a huge late interception and was sacked on the final play by Greyson Gunheim.

Without being overly harsh, Garcia questioned Russell’s work ethic during the radio interview and didn’t think it was fair to have so much put on his shoulders. That Russell wasn’t ready physically or mentally.

Garcia didn’t say he was told directly he would never be the starter, but it’s clear he assumed his chances of playing were zero. He felt Russell would at least be good enough to keep him on the bench.

I think Garcia is starting to have the same regrets about getting out of his contract as he did when when he signed it.

As much as Garcia thought Russell might not be ready, he couldn’t have foreseen it would be this bad through three games. Had Garcia stuck around, the outside pressure to play him would be overwhelming. Cable, whether you want to believe it or not, has gained a pretty good reputation within the building of lobbying Davis. And as much as Davis would hate seeing his future quarterback have to take a seat, the outside scrutiny on his poor play would have turned up the pressure.

If you don’t think Davis pays attention to what’s said, then look no further than Rich Gannon or the way local columnists are called to the carpet on any issue critical of the owner.

Garcia may have had a chance to play, after all.

He bailed out too soon.

i know im alittle late since i just watched the denver game but is it just me or does our defense seem to get beat over the middle where our linebackers should be? I think if we change the defensive scheme and keep the linebackers there instead of dropping them back there wouldnt be as many complete passes against us. Or am i the only one seeing this

you are completely right... anything shallow and in the middle is wide open against us.. thats consistent in the last two seasons and are LB's seem to get worse and worse on pass coverage. That shit was pissin me off last week. And its what we need to do more on offensive

thinking about it... we do have a shot in this game... the reason I say that is because the Texans have a bad run D like us...

so we need to pound the fucking rock! let Bush, D Mac, and Fargas all run that shit all day... just saw on NFL Network they said the Texans been giving up over 200 yards a game rushing

and our secondary needs to be on point... we've seen Aso shut down Andre Johnson in the past... Huff been playing great too

if we can't contain their passing game we're fucked
