Getting away from sampling hella familiar beats and hooks....hip-hop music underestimates the listener at times. People think for music to be good it has to sound like something else.....this dummys down the listener and makes it too easy on the eardrum. It actually becomes "hard work" to hear new music these days because everything is so pop-ified. The more music that escapes the confines of a pop-driven sound, the better chance at originality and diversity in what we see and hear through mainstream avenues.

Come with somethin' new... Somethin' people have never heard of... Some examples would be Bone Thugs, Lynch, 3-6 Mafia (bacc in the day), Eminem, Snoop (bacc in the day), Dre, and the list goes on. All these folks presented the people with somethin' they created and not the everyday typical style...

how about the Street Level Records sound? That's damn original...NOBODY else sounds like them....the beats are off the hook and the flows are sick.....SLR is a good example of original.

One word: Versatility

Ludacris, Jay-Z, and Eminem are all perfect examples of this, with Jay-Z being the most notable and praiseworthy; like him or not, he can be tight AND sell a record on almost any topic...

just cause you sell records, doesn't mean you're any good....and if jay z rapped about lowrider, gangs, or shit related to the west coast, i would think he's even gayer than i already think he is....there's a good 4+ topics he can't rap about well....

yeah jay-z got skills, dont judge him on just the shit u hear on the radio.

sixxness is just probably one of those kids who thinks its "cool" to say mainstream rappers suck, but to jock every underground rapper who aint sold 500 copies. dont take it personal, just an observation, alot of people on this board are like that

Some of the artists I've said "damn, that don't sound like NOTHIN" are Doomsday, The Grind Family, Dayton Family and Twista. Around the NW, Street Level and Deuce 8 Records have a very distinctive sound.

What YoungVicious said...! Almost any rapper comin up in the game these days knows how much of an ICON Jay-Z is, and how much skill he truly posesses...

"Said she loved my necklace...started relaxin../
Now thats what the fuck i call a chain reaction!"

and that was in a song about flossin...to be successful these days, you gotta be ORIGINAL OVER ALL. amd if you're not original, you've got to PURPOSELY MOCK YOURSELF...i could explain how thats done, but ive had enough beef in these last few days to feed all of Guatemala..!

as for Local/Regional Flavor...SLR *DOES* have a very distinct sound, but not any distinct rappers--thats not an insult, thats just the truth. These days, if you aint rappin like one of a very small group of people (incl. Jay-Z, Nas, Jadakiss, Snoop, Cash Money, etc), then its hard to leave your mark...so what I think is (read my signature) that you need people who know how to flow like these people for your label to have that "next level" success, not to mimic them, but to be able to break down how their flow works, what elements it has, the typical sentence structures, and so on.....good luck finding an artist that can do that!

I know, maybe...besides me... 1 other person that can do it...i heard a handfull of his tracks, and in most of em (not all), he's mocking some other rapper's style, and doin a DAMN GOOD JOB at it......welp, he just signed to some label in miami, his CD's comin out later this year....

BYRDIE is original

Byrdie is EXTREMELY original. His voice has that kind of half-singin, half-rappin, melodious quality to it. His lyriks might not be as original, but his vioce most definitely is.

OK, however you fags started tryina talk shit about me, you're all gay. JAY-Z couldn't buy or sell my ass, I gives a fuck how much money he has, he can still fuck off. I, am not one of the "little kids" that thinks mainstream rap is gay....I like some mainstream, but a lot of it sounds the same to me. I don't ride any dick, so whoever said that can fuck off....YV, you're not a fucking expert on any level, so don't fuckin' talk down to me on here, or anywhere else. Cause yoor opinion doesn't mean shit to me (and you hate on people cause you think they're "gay") I see you all like talking shit to someone.....Can we all say "maturity"? I DIDN'T THINK SO.

so do you think that if a lyricist came out with a mix of a few different peoples style would that make him original? and if you could mix 3 peoples style, flow and words, who would you choose?
Not exactly...its not that you mix the 3 styles as much as it is being able to RECOGNIZE what 3 styles you're most similar to...feel me? Most people cant do it, they wanna claim 100% originality over all, and say nobody else has their style...but thats a VERY naive way to look at it

I'd probably combine Jadakiss, Snoop Dogg, and B.G. into a style if i could...Jada got the lyrics, Snoop got the voice, and BG got the flow...i could explain all 3 for hours, in a studio, demonstrate on the mic, in writing..whatever...but people aint tryin to hear it..so...fuck it, let em make their mistakes instead of just listening
