Back in April, we were getting pretty excited about the new baseball film Moneyball. The project was to be directed by Steven Soderbergh and star Brad Pitt as Oakland A's GM Billy Beane. with cameos by ex-MLB players including David Justice and Daryl Strawberry. The inspiration for the script was Michael Lewis' book of the same name, which is a look at how Beane built a great ball team on a small budget. Despite the star power attached, some wondered how a book of stats and inside baseball stories would appeal to the popcorn crowd.

Amy Pascal, the president of production at Columbia, might agree with those sentiments. Despite being a big fan of Lewis' book, Pascal decided to call the whole thing off, claiming the script had changed too much from the one she greenlit, and "fearing the film lacked emotion", according to Reuters. Reuters also states that Pascal has allowed Soderburgh to shop the film around "over the weekend to Warner Bros., which once housed Soderbergh's shingle Section Eight, and Paramount, home to Pitt's Plan B. The companies would have to act fast as the production and its staff can only sit idle so long. If no one snags the package, Columbia could take another crack at it, and try to sync up Soderbergh's and the studio's vision."

So there may still be hope for this yet. It just might be time to bring in a reliever.
