Texas governor orders STD vaccine for all girls
Decision comes after maker of cervical cancer shot doubled lobbying efforts
The Associated Press
Updated: 1:56 p.m. PT Feb 2, 2007
AUSTIN, Texas - Bypassing the Legislature, Republican Gov. Rick Perry signed an order Friday making Texas the first state to require that schoolgirls get vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer.
By issuing an executive order, Perry apparently sidesteps opposition in the Legislature from conservatives and parents’ rights groups who fear such a requirement would condone premarital sex and interfere with the way parents raise their children.
Beginning in September 2008, girls entering the sixth grade — meaning, generally, girls ages 11 and 12 — will have to get Gardasil, Merck & Co.’s new vaccine against strains of the human papillomavirus, or HPV.
Perry, a conservative Christian who opposes abortion and stem-cell research using embryonic cells, counts on the religious right for his political base. But he has said the cervical cancer vaccine is no different from the one that protects children against polio.
“The HPV vaccine provides us with an incredible opportunity to effectively target and prevent cervical cancer,” Perry said in announcing the order.
“If there are diseases in our society that are going to cost us large amounts of money, it just makes good economic sense, not to mention the health and well-being of these individuals to have those vaccines available,” he said.
Merck is bankrolling efforts to pass state laws across the country mandating Gardasil for girls as young as 11 or 12. It doubled its lobbying budget in Texas and has funneled money through Women in Government, an advocacy group made up of female state legislators around the country.
Perry linked to Merck
Perry has several ties to Merck and Women in Government. One of the drug company’s three lobbyists in Texas is Mike Toomey, Perry’s former chief of staff. His current chief of staff’s mother-in-law, Texas Republican state Rep. Dianne White Delisi, is a state director for Women in Government.

Perry also received $6,000 from Merck’s political action committee during his re-election campaign.
Texas allows parents to opt out of inoculations by filing an affidavit objecting to the vaccine on religious or philosophical reasons. Even with such provisions, however, conservative groups say such requirements interfere with parents’ rights to make medical decisions for their children.
The federal government approved Gardasil in June, and a government advisory panel has recommended that all girls get the shots at 11 and 12, before they are likely to be sexually active.
Billions in sales at stake
The New Jersey-based drug company could generate billions in sales if Gardasil — at $360 for the three-shot regimen — were made mandatory across the country. Most insurance companies now cover the vaccine, which has been shown to have no serious side effects.
Merck spokeswoman Janet Skidmore would not say how much the company is spending on lobbyists or how much it has donated to Women in Government. Susan Crosby, the group’s president, also declined to specify how much the drug company gave.
A top official from Merck’s vaccine division sits on Women in Government’s business council, and many of the bills around the country have been introduced by members of Women in Government.

a step in the right direction - the vaccine really works and will prevent a lot of cases of cervical cancer

I don't understand why so many people are opposed to the mandatory vaccination - saying abstinention will help is bullshit, because more than 70% of the population has the virus - even if a girl is a virgin before marriage (it is ridiculous to think that's possible) and she only fucks with her husband, she will still probably get the virus

Two types of people do not support this:

1). They belong to the Christian Right. These people do not have brains.

2). They believe the government has something sinister planned, which you certainly cannot blame them for believing.

In this particular case it looks like the Governor is linked to the drug company that will make huge profits, so it is unlikely he has any real concern about the general population and is motivated strictly by the almighty $, also, you never know how much research has gone into the vaccine since profit is the number one concern for any company, they just want to sell the damn product (that's just the way capitalism works) so it could have some negative side affects.

In the perfect world (stateless society), there wouldn't be any need to release unsafe or untested products to the public, since there would be no profit motivation, but of course, we live in a far from perfect world.

well, I'll be the last one to support the big pharma, because I know how shady they can get (if they tell you there's no cure of certain diseases like AIDS, don't believe them, they're just not interested in finding it), but in this case I feel a lot of the opposition is coming from the first group of people you mentioned

as far as I know, the vaccine works, it's been debated a lot in the scientific community in the last few years and the opinion is largely positive

Who Owns the rights on Tamiflu

by Joseph Mercola

www.mercola.com

Finally, the pieces of the puzzle start to add up. Not long ago, President Bush sought to instill panic in this country by telling us a minimum of 200,000 people will die from the avian flu pandemic, but it could be as bad as 2 million deaths in this country alone.

This hoax is then used to justify the immediate purchase of 80 million doses of Tamiflu, a worthless drug that in no way shape or form treats the avian flu, but only decreases the amount of days one is sick and can actually contribute to the virus having more lethal mutations.

So the U.S. placed an order for 20 million doses of this worthless drug at a price of $100 per dose. That comes to a staggering $2 billion.

We are being told that Roche manufactures Tamiflu and, in a recent New York Times article, they were battling whether or not they would allow generic drug companies to help increase their production.

But if you dig further you will find that a drug was actually developed by a company called Gilead that 10 years ago gave Roche the exclusive rights to market and sell Tamiflu.

Ahh, The Plot Thickens...

If you read the link below from Gilead, you'll discover Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was made the chairman of Gilead in 1997.

Since Rumsfeld holds major portions of stock in Gilead, he will handsomely profit from the scare tactics of the government that is being used to justify the purchase of $2 billion of Tamiflu.

That makes a lot of sense... I (for the life of me) couldn't figure out why the Governor (of Texas no less) would support something like that...
