That's true. For those of you who aren't actually musicians in the sense that you don't play an instrument or have studied music theory, hip hop is deeply rooted in other genres of music but it basically comes down to jazz.
you don't have to study music theory for that knowledge genius

In jazz, it's considered a good thing to use another person's ideas and transform then into your own. Listen to any jazz soloist and s/he will use a lick from someone else's solo in his/her own. The idea is to use that phrase of music tastefully enough to where it enhances your style but doesn't take away from the originality of the music
borrowing three notes from a largely improvisational artform is nothing like borrowing a whole verse.

There are phrases we use when we talk that we didn't come up with on our own. We have a whole vocabulary of sentences whether they be from movies, music, speeches, teachers, etc. We learn how to use them and then throw them into conversation when we see fit.
to quote a movie, "you're an idiot."

The same goes for hip hop. The D.O.C. is one of the originals. He helped build the hip hop language. It would be irrational to think that someone could write a whole song without repeating something that was said before.
i could. just because he helped build hip hop (which i would argue, maybe he helped build west coast hip hop, but not hip hop in general) doesn't mean that i can't write something that hasn't been said before. that's your dumbest statement right there.

^^^^So what are u saying? I get your point, i oversimplified everything. But am i wrong? When did Tech N9ne use a whole verse of someone else's? The point was that I don't consider it biting if Tech N9ne pays homage to a classic artist by using some of his lyrics. Are u arguing my point or just arguing in general?

I shouldn't have said that it's hard to write a completely original song because i know that it can be done. In fact, Tech N9ne made his name doing it. You took what i said out of context. To quote a movie, "you're an asshole."
i'm not arguing against or with your point really... just showing how pointless your "point" was.

to quote another movie: It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.
