GALVESTON, Texas (AP) -- A high school teacher faces marijuana possession charges after drug-sniffing dogs on a routine campus sweep led police to his classroom desk, authorities said.

No drugs were found in the desk of Stakely McConnell, a Spanish teacher at Ball High School. Instead, the dogs smelled papers that had a marijuana odor transferred from McConnell's hands, school police chief LeeRoy Amador said.

McConnell, 25, admitted to smoking marijuana over the weekend, Amador said.

Authorities said they later found a half cigarette of marijuana in his car, but that there is no evidence or suspicion that students were involved in the alleged drug use.

McConnell was placed on administrative leave after being arrested on campus Tuesday.

Possession of marijuana carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a $4,000 fine. Because the alleged discovery happened in a drug-free zone, the district attorney can increase the charge to a state jail felony, which carries a maximum two-year sentence and $10,000 fine

Last Thursday, during my prep period, I'm shitting and checking my messages (as most of us do), and I get this message from another teacher whose a buddy:

"Ay, they got the dogs out here and their going through the classrooms - so if you got anything in there, get it out."

Pretty crazy message to get, but I didn't have anything with me at all. I would never do that, and I never get high before work, either. When I get home, now that's BLAST OFF time, but not at work.

So yeah, we had one of these routine checks just the other day.

Since it was a high school teacher, he could've has easily said that the smell or residue was from the hands of one of the kids. He basically snitched himself out for saying he smoked during the weekend

Not to long ago I was coming back from my moms house. I was waiting in the ferry line and a cop comes up with his bomb sniffing dog. He shows me some package and asks if its cool if he puts it on my tire so he could keep his dog "busy". I JUST smoked a bowl, I can hardly talk and I say sure thats cool. Fuck I about shit my pants because my friend had a sack and a pipe in the glove compartment. The dog starts sniffing the other cars and finally gets to mine. My heart was beating so hard, then he found the dog sniffs out the little package and barks. Then cop tells me thanks and leaves. I put it together later that the dog was only trained to sniff out bombs, still I was freshly stoned so I was tripping.
