Chargers-Raiders to be shown on KFMB-TV Local 8 and KCBS Channel 2

Friday, October 29, 2004
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ed Trimble, President & Chief Operating Officer of KFMB Stations, Angelo Damante, Owner of Mercedes-Benz of Escondido, and Daniel Tucker, Chairman of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, have guaranteed the purchase of enough tickets to lift the television blackout on Sunday’s Chargers-Raiders game. Some general seats, including nearly 900 Club Seats, remain on sale.

The game will be televised live on KFMB, Channel 8 in San Diego, and KCBS, Channel 2 in Los Angeles.

The tickets will be donated to the police, fire and sheriff departments of San Diego, Escondido and Valley Center to recognize their valor demonstrated one year ago in the San Diego wildfires.

“We are very pleased that we were able to work this out, and even more pleased that those who benefit are the people to whom we owe such a debt of gratitude,” said Trimble. “It’s great for everyone to be able to see this classic matchup, and we couldn’t be happier.”

Damante adds, “Giving back to the San Diego area as a whole is important to us. This live telecast is great for the local economy, and the Chargers see how much the community cares about them. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.”

“We’re proud of San Diego and we’re proud of the San Diego Chargers,” said Tucker. “We welcomed this opportunity to help give a great football weekend to the community and enable our local fire, police and sheriff departments the opportunity to enjoy the excitement of a great football game.”

General tickets returned today by the Oakland Raiders as well as Club tickets are still available at the Chargers’ ticket office at Gate C at Qualcomm Stadium or by calling (619) 220-TIXS (8497).

ProFootballWeekly.com asks associate editor Jeff Reynolds for his thoughts on the hottest topics in the NFL.

PFW: What are your thoughts on Week Eight?

Reynolds: In talking to one scout in the AFC West on Monday, one thing is becoming more clear: San Diego isn't going away. QB Drew Brees had won only five games as a starter entering this season. Now, he's 5-3 and has the Chargers positioned for a playoff push. AFC West observers aren't sure the Chargers can last with their offensive line. But with Brees playing with the kind of confidence he had at Purdue and weapons around him, San Diego is in position if they can avoid melting in December, as the Vikings and Dolphins have done in recent history. TE Antonio Gates is going to the Pro Bowl and not only because he's the Chargers' best receiver. He's a complete tight end who blocks with effort, position and quickness instead of power and size. He's a perfect complement for a team building around a franchise runner. Gates can't be covered by linebackers, meaning teams have to take their chances with a safety. It's the same quandary coordinators tackle vs. Kansas City: If you bring a safety to the line of scrimmage, you either cover the tight end with a linebacker (a sure losing battle) or use the free safety. If you opt for the latter, the CB play has to be flawless.

Second down: The AFC's biggest surprise team is probably San Diego, and that surprise can be summed up in two words: Drew Brees. How much of an apology do we owe this guy? Was drafting Philip Rivers an unnecessary move? And can Brees take this team to the playoffs?

Patrick Hruby: An apology? Er, we're sportswriters. And sportswriting means never having to say you're sorry (unlike love, which means saying "I'm sorry" over and over again, ad nausea, until death grants you a sweet, merciful release. Kisses, honey!) What those of us in the fourth estate really owe Brees is a nice, fawning magazine profile, and a promise to refrain from any talk of a quarterback controversy until next summer's training camp. Assuming he doesn't bolt via free agency first.

Uh, Drew, we're sorry. Very sorry.
That said, if Brees and his less-than-formidable Chargers mates manage to make the playoffs, I'll consider a mea culpa -- addressed to Marty Schottenheimer. Marty, baby: Come back to Washington. All is forgiven. At this point, 8-8 looks pretty good.

Alan Grant: Drew Brees doesn't need any apologies. See, while everyone was writing him off, the kid was not only learning how to play, but becoming a free agent, too. Sure, the Chargers could keep both he and Rivers, or they could solidify their investment in Rivers by letting Brees go. Either way, Brees gets paid. In the meantime, with L.T. scampering behind him and the addition of proven and reliable (if not dynamic) Kennan McCardell, and the underrated speed of Tim Dwight, Brees and his mates are certainly in place for at least some wild-card love.

Skip Bayless: Drew Brees is still the same old undersized quarterback with the below-average arm. But this season, the pressure was finally off him for being "traded" for Michael Vick and for having to be the return-to-glory future of the Chargers. Now that future belongs to Rivers -- Brees was just providing a warm body until the kid gets comfortable. But a funny thing happened on the way back to the bench: Brees walked into a career-year "Twilight Zone." He's playing loose, flinging the ball with college confidence and winning games he wasn't supposed to win. Now that Oakland is crumbling, Denver is struggling and Kansas City is getting a late start, the AFC West looks steal-able. Brees has upper-echelon weapons in Tomlinson, McCardell and Gates. Brees is the present. Rivers remains the future.

Aaron Schatz: How about a BIG apology? We're all talking about the need to give Michael Vick more time before we decide he's overrated/as good as advertised; and yet nobody was willing to give that time to Drew Brees, who came out in the same draft. We have no idea how good Philip Rivers will someday be, but imagine this year's Chargers with Brees passing to Roy Williams along with Gates, Parker, and McCardell. Or with Sean Taylor at safety. Or Robert Gallery protecting Brees and clearing the way for LT. Multiply Brees' current stats by two and they look an awful lot like a prime Troy Aikman season (1995, to be exact). Everyone sing it with Boomer and TJ -- "San Di-E-go, SUP-er Char-gers!"

2004 Power Rankings: Week 9

Rk(LW) Team Rec. Comment

1 (2) Eagles 7-0-0 Eagles fans have been calling for the top spot for weeks and now it's theirs. But waiting in Week 9 is the Steelers, who have a little bit of experience in knocking off No. 1 teams.

2 (7) Steelers 6-1-0 The Steelers opened the season at No. 26 in our rankings. Guess we were wrong about that one.

3 (1) Patriots 6-1-0 Injuries are clearly starting to take their toll on the defending champs. No matter how much depth a team has, playing without your top RB (Dillon) and WR (Branch) is going to be hard.

4 (6) Jets 6-1-0 The Jets just ran all over the Dolphins with 275 yards rushing on 41 carries (6.7 yards per carry).

5 (12) Giants 5-2-0 Kurt Warner has been solid, but Tiki Barber is the reason the Giants are 5-2.

6 (3) Vikings 5-2-0 What happened to all the talk about the Vikings finding other weapons besides Randy Moss?

7 (10) Falcons 6-2-0 Michael Vick sure is fun to watch when he's running with the football.

8 (13) Chargers 5-3-0 How much money could you have won if you'd gone to Vegas and bet on the Chargers being the NFL's third highest scoring team (27.4 points per game) eight weeks into the season.

It's been a long minute since SD had a solid football team. I hate Spanos making us buy 2 extra tickets for each Raider ticket. Wish I could have been there Sunday to see the whomping.

As long as Brees keeps his up ain't no way we're fading in December. Obviously we ain't a Pittsburgh or New England, but just a playoff berth would be big. Especially if Brees has finally "broken out" along with LT, Gates, and McCardell we can finally say we have a good offense and concentrate on strengthening our D. I say AFC Champs by 2007.
