Rapper Spice 1 recovering from gunshot wound

(12-06) 15:46 PST HAYWARD - Bay Area rapper Spice 1 is recovering in an East Bay hospital after being shot in his car outside his parents' Hayward home, authorities said today.

The rapper, whose given name is Robert Green, 37, was shot in the chest about 12:30 a.m. Monday in an SUV on the 26000 block of Chiplay Avenue, said Hayward police Lt. Reid Lindblom.

Green told officers that he was sitting in his Cadillac Escalade when someone came up to the window and shot him through the glass.

No motive for the shooting has been established, and no arrests have been made, Lindblom said.

Green, who has worked with rappers Method Man, Too , Ice-T and the late Tupac Shakur, suffered a collapsed lung, his family said.

"He's in pain, but otherwise he's coming along really well," his mother, Jean Green-Craven, 57, said today from Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.

"He's a very lucky young man," she said.

Green's stepfather, Jerry Craven, 57, said that "everybody loves him" and that "my son would always tell me if he had got into a confrontation or an argument at party, and that has never happened."

Green would "give you his last dime," his stepfather said.

He told his family that he had been listening to music and talking to his girlfriend on the phone while sitting in the Escalade. Someone then walked up to the passenger side of the vehicle and tried to "jimmy" the door, Craven said.

Green demanded to know who it was and was shot, Craven said.

Craven said it was possible that someone was trying to steal the Escalade without realizing his stepson was inside. The vehicle has tinted windows, and it was dark, Craven said.

"I don't think it was rap-related," Craven said.

Green was born in Texas and moved to the Bay Area when he was 5. He attended Mount Eden High School in Hayward and got into rap in the early 1980s, his family said. He has released more than a dozen albums.

Spice 1 Describes Shooting From Hospital Bed

Bay Area veteran rapper Spice 1 is still in process of recovering from a bullet wound he suffered from when he was shot infront of his mothers house around midnight Monday.

Spice 1 described the shooting over the phone from his hospital bed Thursday night.

“I was just sitting in my car,” Spice said. “I parked in front of my mom’s house. I went to sleep because I don’t like to wake her up that late.”

Spice 1’s mother, Jean Green-Craven, said that he had been at a photo shoot all day Sunday and had eaten dinner at a friend’s house before driving to her house late Sunday night.

He said he had fell asleep, but then heard a sound by the door. “So I woke up. I see the dude and I start banging on the window. He got scared and ran and fired the pistol while he was running away.”

The bullet went through the escalade’s passenger-side window, grazing his chin and then hitting him in the upper left side of his chest.

“I was going to go after him, but he ran,” he said. “I stuck my finger in the (bullet) hole. I said, ‘Damn, that was a bullet wound!’”

He said that it is hard to identify the shooter due to him wearing a hood thus making it hard to identify the man’s face. He believes the shooter was Hispanic because the man was not wearing gloves.

His mother was in bed with her husband, Jerry Craven, when she heard a loud pounding on the door. She answered it and saw her son pulling off his jacket and shirts.

“I can’t believe those fools shot me!” he told her.

When Craven saw drops of blood falling from her son’s chest, she called 9-1-1.

He went to the kitched to get some water and after complaining that he couldn’t breathe, he collapsed.

His mother explained that he received stitches where the bullet had grazed his chin. The bullet went through his chest, punctured his lung and then got lodged in the muscles of his back.

“They couldn’t get it out,” she said. “He’s going to have to live with that bullet.”

After explaining that a rod had to be put through his side to get to his lung, he said that he was doing well. “I’m holding it down,” he said.

“He’s in quite a bit of pain,” his mother said. “But it’s good pain because we know he’s coming back. He’s a strong man, so we know he’s coming back.”

Spice 1 is currently working on his new album.

“The album I’m working on now, I’m just trying to drop some good music,” he said.

When asked about getting shot, he said, “It gives me something to work with.”
