SOUNDSCAN NUMBERS FROM 3/21/07

1/MusiQ Soulchild/Luvanmusiq – It’s all about timing, finding the empty lane and relying on music people love over Hollywood Hype. 150K and a number #1 album…is Fabolous up to the challenge? Lyor Cohen 1 – L.A. Reid 0

2/Lloyd/Street Love – Federal charges, 50 Cent, Def Jam ousting…all of that and in the end The Inc quietly pop bottles as the young Georgia crooner Lloyd comes about 5k short of the top spot riding off the open lane/monster hit record theory. The word on the streets about the album will determine how far it goes.

3/Rich Boy/Rich Boy – Any new artists dropping over 100k in their first week (112K plus) is cause for celebration. Add in some ringtones and legal downloads and the Santa Monica suits just might make their money back. The question will be do they spend more bread in visibility in return for a chance at the triangle symbol? Inquiring minds at 1755 Broadway would like to know.

7/Amy Winehouse/Back to Black – Oh yea this is what you call The Sleeper, The Dark Horse. Niche music that rides off of word of mouth and the John Mayer Theory (see last week’s analysis). 51K first week, not a bad deal.

8/8-Ball & MJG/Ridin High – If Bad Boy didn’t botch the first single and there were actually a little promotion to go with it, the Orange Mound natives would have been fighting Lloyd and Rich Boy for the 2 and 3 spots. Instead it does half the numbers off of loyal fan base alone.

13/Fergie/Dutchess – I have to admit this project kept its sea legs as a -6 drop after 26 weeks on the charts is still a good look. 40K plus this week with 1.6 million in the cut.

22/Gwen Stefani/Sweet Escape – The million mark has finally been crossed after 15 weeks with 26K plus scanned. Major labels strive with projects like this selling 6 million not 1. Warren G used to sell 4 times this much a decade ago, wow.

35/Gerald Levert/In My Songs – 18K plus this week brings the Late OG to just a feather under 300k in five weeks…very decent numbers.

40/Beyonce/B’Day – Beyonce teams up with Shakira to ensure your teenage son stays up until you fall asleep to fire up You Tube and handle his business. 16K plus this week with the Hips Don’t Lie combo threatening to race her back up the charts…once again.

79/Bow Wow/Price of Fame – Good looks and charm can take you up to a point but as you grow your audience grows along with you and expect more in the form of depth and TALENT. Bow Wizzle takes the L this trip. 9,500 plus this week as he creeps on Gold.

80/Diddy/Press Play – Everybody says they like the latest single out but is that translating to albums sales? No. Why? Because the real value in Diddy is seeing him in the tabloids not rapping on records. 575K in 22 weeks, Aasim what’s good?

93/Nas/Hip Hop is Dead – He’s paid, highly respected on a “real mc” level and is the most talked about rapper that never seeks attention. Do you want to be famous for a hot second or have a career?

105/Jay Z/Kingdom Come – 200 million Rocawear sell out as Jigga continues to use CD albums as loss leaders for his other profit centers. If you don’t know now you do!

139/Consequence/Don’t Quit Your Day Job – Don’t let the media turn you out and have you discussing your sales and making that the focal point instead of the music. Ignore the mainstream and cater to your core audience and let the numbers be what they be. The worst that can happen is you get drop, you go totally indy and do 50K a pop every 8-12 months which will nicely supplement your 9 to 5 dollars.

154/Jibbs/Jibbs Feat Jibbs – 261K after 21 weeks. Artist don’t let that ringtone money pass you buy, that’s all I have to say.

169/Jim Jones/Hustler’s P.O.M.E. – The Dip Set Formula shows the game that you can turn a profit by ignoring everybody else by keeping a steady dose of hard core drugs in the veins of your loyal fiends and that equates profit. 361K and growing.

179/ Diana Ross I Love You – Only a hater would say she didn’t look good on American Idol. Just under 63k in 7 weeks as she double her numbers from last week.

191/Don Omar/King Of Kings – One more week and its 400k in the cut for the current Reggaeton Champ. Where’s Daddy Yankee? Dammn.
