In my opinion, it's not that simple. Typically, mentally stable children who are raised in healthy households do not go around murdering their parents. There may be more to this case than what meets the eye.
For one, there is a step father involved. Not to draw on any stereotypes, but there may have been a history of child abuse/neglect. And why did his mother divorce his biological father? Again, domestic violence and/or abuse is a possibility.
Why didn't his stepfather keep his handgun locked and hidden? Why didn't his mother see to it that he does? Surely, any responsible parent would. I'm not suggesting that it's a justification for murder, but I am suggesting that it's a clue that his parents may have been dysfunctional.
And of course, there's always the possibility of an undiagnosed mental illness.
Basically, I wouldn't jump to any conclusions before learning more about this case.

Spare the rod, spoil the child! They shoulda beat the brakes off him. Why parents are so afraid to discipline their kids is beyond me. I don't have kids of my own, but when the time comes, you best believe I'ma put the belt to 'em if they disrespect or disobey me or any other adult.
