Tom Joyner wants this information to reach his listeners...
You have probably heard of "NUD" as a result of the Tom Joyner morning
show related to CompUSA. NUD is the acronym for a very subtle and
little-known marketing term specifically directed toward people of
color.

NUD stands for Non Urban Dictate. These three words essentially mean
that a company is not interested in the Black consumer. A NUD label
means that a company does not want their marketing and advertising
materials placed in media that claim an urban audience (black folks) as
their main target.

There are legitimate reasons for companies not using urban radio. It may
be that Blacks don't index high in certain categories or that a
company's strategy is to market to the Black consumer down the road
after they have established a strong position in their primary target.

But NUD usually means that a company is not interested in the Black
consumer. Companies evade discrimination liability by embracing it as
theory rather than policy. As a service to Black consumers, the Urban
Institute will list all companies that have a NUD policy. Armed with
this information, we feel that Black consumers will be able to make
informed buying decisions.

Companies with NUD policies:
a. Starbucks
b. Jos. A Bank
c. CompUSA
d. Weight Watchers
e. Keebler
f. Life Savers
g. Continental Airlines
h. Northwest Airlines
i. America West Airlines
j. HBO - Apollo Series
k. Paternal Importers
l. Calico Corners
m. OM Scott
n. Pepperidge Farms
o. Ethan Allen
p. Busy Body Fitness
q. Mondavi Wines
r. Builders Square
s. Don Pablo
t. Lexus
u. Aruba Tourism
v. Ciba Vision
w. Kindercare
x. Grady Restaurant
y. Eddie Bauer

Please forward this information on to any other consumer that you
consider a friend and advise them to do likewise.
Remember, we can't act wisely unless we are informed wisely.

OK... I am gonna play the (white) devil's advocate here.

Why can't a company choose how it wants to spend its money? If a company feels that their product will not spark much interest in the Black community, why should it make a futile attept to advertise for reasons of racial equality? The article posted above is itself biased; the author passively expresses that an NUD is a negative reflection upon Blacks in general, thus making the company "racist." NUDs do not mean that a company will refuse its services to Blacks, nor give them any less quality of service or good. It simply means that the company does not see Blacks as a demographic that is worth specifically targetting in the attempt to earn more profit. Ah yes, capitalism.

Are there not products that appeal to Black consumers more than White consumers? I do not expect companies that sell goods or provide services highly demanded by Blacks, to go out of their way to reach me. I feel that the shadiness of the term NUDs is perpetuated by it being relegated to partial secrecy; it only being a theory, not a practice. Why should a company have to bite its toungue when speaking about it's targeted audience and main source of profits?

I don't see a problem with it.

Maybe they just feel that the urban audience doesn't care about their products as much as say...a Rock audience.

Looking at the list, I would agree.

You really think some rap station listeners want to hear about Mondavi Wines and Ethan Allen?

Or eating Pepperidge Farm cookies while drinking a double tall cappachino from Starbucks, lol.

For real tho, its kinda B.S. to group people like that. WTF with Lexus? How many rap songs mention Lexus in them?

SUM PRODUCTS JUST DONT APPEAL TO CERTAIN RACES... BLACK PEOPLE HAVE DIF HAIR PRODUCTS.. THEY PROBLY USE NUD AGAINST WHITES N SHIT.... IF ITS BASED ON THEORY N NOT POLICY, ITS A LEGIT DECISION... I DONT SEE MANY BLACK PEOP[LE WHO DRINK STARBUX... NOR DO I SEE TOO MANY WHITE PEOPLE WHO DRINK STRAWBERRY SODA... ITS DEPENDS ON LOCATION AND POPULATION OF RACE IN EACH TOWN WHERE THA PRODUCT IS DISTRIBUTED...

you sure it means that?what NUD could mean is that they're not interested in catering to the lower income crowd all together which can consist of various ethnic backgrounds... i don't think urban would automatically mean black...
Exactly. I'm Mexican and poorer than any black person I know. But I guess this doesn't matter to me since NUD only affects blacks.

If Starbucks would put a shop in the hood and then market to blacks, maybe more blacks would drink thier coffee?!

You cant compare this to hair products, and shit like that. White poeple dont have any use for relaxer or World of Curls (stupid example, lol), those are black products. A Lexus, Starbucks Coffee, or a damn cookie is a universal product, that any person can purchase and use regardless of race.
