PEN TOOL and mask out the BG is the best way imo........

and if u got a dark subject in front of a dark background add a curve layer(or highlight) on top of all layers and move settings up drastictly for the meantime ur using the pen tool. after ur done u can delete the curve layer

Yeah you should try starting a PSD website, get some ad revenue on it. Etc

Clean cuts. I used to use Pen Tool, but now I just find it's a hassle. So now I've been using lasso or whatever, then mask. Sometimes quick mask.

What version of photoshop did curve layers come out on? I'm still on CS2 and am not really up to date on newer features...

You should have it, click the little half black/half white ball at the bottom of the layers palette and go to curves.
