Sheriff: Hip-Hop Star Could Work Against Efforts To Curb Gang Violence
SALINAS, Calif. -- The board of supervisors made the final decision Tuesday to allow hip-hop artist Snoop Dogg to perform in Monterey County.
There has been a major community uproar about the rapper performing at the upcoming Monterey Music Summit.
Supervisor Ila Mettee-McCutchon adamantly opposed allowing Snoop Dogg to perform.
"It seemed to go for freedom of speech, but that was not my issue," McCutchon said. "My issue was at least one group incites violence by their lyrics and my main concern is public safety."
Other supervisors made it clear that they may not approve of the lyrics, but felt that the decision was about freedom of speech.
Members of the community voiced their opinions, which were also strong and mixed. Many people wanted to eliminate any possibility of violence, while others said they believed Snoop Dogg has changed since his days of association with gangs.
Monterey County Sheriff Mike Kanalakis said he has no problem with the event as long as the promoter agrees to his conditions, which include weapons and drug checks for performers, officers stationed backstage and undercover officers at the event.
Sheriff's deputies said Snoop Dogg's appearance could work against recent efforts to curb gang activity in the area.
Last year, Fletcher organized the first summit at the fairgrounds. He said a similar music line-up cost him $3,700 for two deputies at the state-owned park.
This year, the event at county-run Laguna Seca, is costing Fletcher $38,000. The increase of more than $34,000 is due to added security requests.
