SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) -- The San Jose City Council has approved a plan to turn the location of one of the state’s largest flea markets into a major housing and commercial development.
The 9-1 vote came after many vendors pleaded their case to council members, saying the plan would ruin their livelihood. Although the Council said they were sympathetic to vendors, they pointed out that the city had already given the Flea Market owners initial approval for their project.
The development is one of the biggest residential projects recently approved by the city. About 2,800 homes and up to 365,000 square feet of commercial space is planned for the 120-acre property.
Owners of the Flea Market plan to move the business to another location. Roughly 40,000 people shop at the market each week.
