Mayne I seriously hope this shit touches some people because it needs to be said and I hope it makes some up and coming cats realise how things are and let this help them spread their sound.
I'll speak on Sir Moj in a second, first up I HAVE to smash on cats who act like the internet is killing their hustle in getting on in the rap game. Everyone is always yapping about don't download, buy the CD.
A lot of industry cats including A-Wax and Done Deal been on here speaking on bootleggers and acting like the internet is killing Bay Rap (I read about too many cats who feel this way)
Damn, I completely understand why they say this, BUT if your CD isn't known to anyone outside of Rasputins and Tower in the Bay, how many people going to hear your shit? What is your maximum potential recoup?
Which brings me to Sir Moj. I downloaded his shit off some bootleggers. Damn. Call me a bootlegger myself and we going to bump heads, I got 1500 original CD's and its all on the Bay, if I can buy it, I will do.
But I can't buy Sir Moj, never came up on that, never had the opportunity to swoop that CD, So... I came across a download of his Heat Rocks album and I know dude is on the Siccness so I peeped it.
And let me tell you... that CD was DOPE. One of the best I've heard in a minute. A burn of that been in rotation. It was the kind of sound that got me into Bay rap in the first place, that shit was so on point.
I was going to post up to just speak on the album, but then I realised shit was more fundamental than just recommending the CD: I would never have known without downloading it, this shit that supposed to be so shiesty.
Cats who act like the internet is all bad, are tripping: If you think the internet is stealing your money route, tell me why I downloaded a copy of Sir Moj, and right now I'd pay dude 20$ for a real CD.
If your quality is there, anyone will get on it. If cats like your product they'll go swoop the real thing, if you're up and coming, downloading is the best promotion and exposure you can get, you got the world at your doorstep.
Everything people say about downloaders, maybe its true for a 40 album when dude don't need people to find out, they can cop that in the store and break bread without auditioning, but if you're new, fuck it, let people download.
I would never have come up on that Sir Moj CD and I been trippin that I did because it was great. It was the exact sound that got me into Bay rap, with the funk and the beats that bump for days in the car.
If you really want some critique, I could mention how dude switches it up on a track over like an electronic trance type beat, where I come from where music like Massive Attack and Roni Size is big, I can play that shit and people pay attention.
So there it is, if you got music that will appeal to people out the bay and also across the world, if you fresh out the gate, why would you ever be mad about some cats ripping that shit and spreading it on the internet?
What goes around comes around, and ten downloaders this year is an extra ten customers next year on the next album that you would never have had. You got to speculate to accumulate.
I was casting my mind back and remembering that in like 1998 when the internet wasn't even big, I was at college and downloaded legitimate shit off Young Ren of the Doja Click when dude had an MP3.com page.
Within two years I had every damn CD of theirs, Speed Kills was my shit, I had gone and copped everything I could just off bumping some MP3's. So don't let legal or illegal downloading get you mad, it may be the best promo you ever get.
"Downloading is killing rap". No playa it ain't, and what doesn't kill you can only make you stronger. Real talk. End of message.... @ Sir Moj, get at me, I want to cop your CD retail.
