Oakland -- About a thousand people were involved in a sideshow at the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland last night during which shots were fired at police, an Oakland Police officer said.

Last night's second annual dance and party put on by Oakland's Shadows of the Knight motorcycle club involved over 1,000 people on "dozens of motorcycles and hundreds of vehicles'' involved in sideshow activity, the officer said.

Police first heard of a disturbance at 11 p.m. and began to break up the scene at around 1 a.m. At around 2 a.m. someone in the still-rowdy crowd fired seven shots at police, the officer said.

The crowd of people and vehicles eventually adjourned to the Nation's Hamburger restaurant at Fourth Street and Broadway, then to what the officer said was the Goodfellas motorcycle clubhouse at 106th and Bancroft Avenues, where they continued doing sideshow activity until about 4 a.m.

Sideshow activity, according to the officer, includes playing loud music and blocking streets. It usually involves people doing donuts and other types of reckless driving.

Two Killed In Oakland Shootings

POSTED: 12:01 pm PDT August 28, 2005

OAKLAND -- A teenage girl and a 42-year-old woman lost their lives in separate shootings in Oakland overnight that also injured a third victim, according to Oakland police.

The first shooting occurred around 10:45 p.m. in the area of 52nd Avenue and East 10th Street, according to police Sgt. Brian Medeiros.

Medeiros said between 10 and 20 people were involved in a dispute at that location that began as a verbal argument and then turned physical. At some point someone opened fire, fatally wounding a 16-year-old girl who was part of the small crowd, he said.

The victim, whose name has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Medeiros would not comment on the motive for the shooting, but said "It looks like she was the target."

Medeiros said the girl lived with her parents and several siblings in Oakland. He said she had attended Oakland's Fremont High School in the past, but said he was unsure whether she was still enrolled there.

Police are interviewing potential witnesses to the shooting, but no suspects have been taken into custody so far, Medeiros said.

The second shooting occurred shortly before 4 a.m. today in the 2100 block of Mitchell Street in Oakland's Fruitvale district, according to police Sgt. Tony Jones.

Jones said the victims in that shooting, a man and a woman, were approached on the street by a suspect who "asked if they were in a gang."

"They said no and they were shot anyway," Jones said.

Both victims were taken to area hospitals for treatment and the woman, age 42, was later pronounced dead, Jones said.

Jones said a red belt worn by the male victim may have sparked the confrontation. That victim is reportedly in stable condition.

Robbery does not appear to have been a motive in the shooting and no suspects have yet been identified, Jones said.

The deceased woman's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, Jones said

Yea, it makes sense to pop at somebody when they aren't poppin' at you first. *shakes head*. People obviously don't know the purpose of owning a gun. At first it was to protect against tyrrany, then it was just for self defense, period. Guns weren't created to pop at somebody who isn't, or has no intention of, poppin' at you.

I wonder, if I bring children into this world, will they live in fear? Somethin' to think about every time you hear of somebody bustin' guns for the fuck of it, because they're fuckin hard. Is it all really worth it???
