Woman survives wild 100 mph ride on car hood from Manteca to Pleasanton

PLEASANTON -- A woman survived an unbelievable car ride early Saturday from Manteca to Pleasanton -- on the hood of a minivan going 100 mph, police said.
The incident began about 12:30 a.m. at the couple's Manteca home, said Rex Osborn, a spokesman for the Manteca Police Department. The two had gotten into a fight and when Christopher Michael Carroll tried to leave in the family minivan, with his wife trying to stop him. She got in front of the vehicle, Carroll did not stop and the woman somehow ended up on the hood of the car, Osborn said.
Carroll, 36, continued driving with his wife on the hood, got on the freeway and drove at what witnesses said was a speed of about 100 mph. The woman, who Osborn described as small, held onto a mirror and windshield wipers as they went over the Altamont Pass and into the Tri-Valley.
At least two witnesses, who did not know the couple, reported seeing the wild ride, making the story credible, Osborn said. If not for the witnesses, it would have been harder to prove the incident occurred.
The van slowed down on Interstate 580 in Pleasanton, Osborn said. The woman rolled off the van and a good Samaritan took her to a hospital, where she was treated for hypothermia and scrapes.
Carroll had returned to Manteca, where officers there later found him and arrested him. He was booked at San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp on suspicion of attempted murder, kidnapping and corporal injury to a spouse. He is being held there without bail.
Before Saturday's incident, Osborn said Manteca police had contact with Carroll on Thursday, when he was arrested for being under the influence after he hid in a Dumpster and refused to come out.
