denver nuggets notes
Kemp's tryout as free agent under review
By Adam Thompson
Denver Post Staff Writer

The Nuggets put Shawn Kemp through a three-day, high-altitude trial this weekend during their free-agent tryout camps.

Coach George Karl would not render a verdict at camp's end Monday.

"To answer that question now would not be fair to us or to him, probably," Karl said. "He did a great job of getting in shape. He went through five practices at a very hard level, in a two-a-day mentality, and survived. He had moments where he was very impressive.

"But again, he's got to regroup and he's got to regain some of the specialness that he had. Can he do that? Is his body going to hold up? Can he sustain the discipline to keep in shape? I think those things will be answered more in a two-month period than a two-day period."

Kemp, 36, is a former all-star who hasn't played in the NBA since the 2002-03 season, when his weight ballooned to well past 300 pounds. His performance intrigued Karl, who said because of his long history with Kemp, who played for him in Seattle, he would talk this week with Tony Dutt, Kemp's representative.

"He's on our list," the coach said of Kemp.

The forward said he felt tired after a weekend working against mostly minor-league and European-league players hoping for an invitation to the Nuggets' summer-league team.

"But other than that, it's been pretty good," Kemp said of his first games in at least seven months. "These guys have played (this) last season. One thing I wanted to do this summer was start
early, playing against NBA talent."
He added that he needs to improve playing against bigger bodies, and that he still needs work on his inside moves and shooting. He would like to participate in a summer league to further reacquaint himself with the league.

Meanwhile, Karl said the Nuggets will make their judgments on the auditioning players in about a week, though they may have another camp, too.
