SAN FRANCISCO -- A man who beat his mother to death with nunchucks -- wooden sticks strung together by a cord -- will spend 16 years in prison, District Attorney Kamala Harris announced Monday.

Carlos Ramos, 27, was sentenced Friday in San Francisco Superior Court to 15 years to life for murder, and another year for using a deadly weapon, Harris announced.

The guilty verdict came March 1, after a five-week trial and four days of jury deliberations.

Soon after his arrest in Jan. 2006, police said that Ramos acknowledged he had used cocaine on the night his mother, Daysi Jiron, was killed. He'd gone to her room in the middle of the night complaining that he had difficulty breathing, and told her about his drug use.

When Jiron tried to leave the building, Ramos became afraid she was going to turn him in, and he beat her, then strangled her with the nunchucks, he told police.
