A 19-year-old San Francisco man was fatally shot in the parking lot of a Yuba City gas station early Saturday, police said.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired in the parking lot of the Quik Stop at Bridge Street and Oji Way shortly after 1 a.m., Detective Sgt. Bryan Bernardis said.

Nobody was there when police arrived, but there was evidence of shots having been fired, Bernardis said.

Shortly after that, police were notified that the victim, with two gunshot wounds to the abdomen, had arrived at Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville by private car.

The victim underwent surgery but was pronounced dead at 2:42 a.m., Bernardis said.

The Sutter County Coroner's Office did not release the victim's name at the Police Department's request.

Saturday night, the Police Department continued to decline to release the victim's name, citing the ongoing investigation.

"They've got some leads and solid things they're chasing that they don't want to jeopardize," said Sgt. Lincoln Eden. "They don't want to compromise anything."

Bernardis said police spoke with several witnesses, whom he described as "very uncooperative."

Police are about 90 percent sure who the suspect is, Bernardis said. He couldn't confirm the shooting was gang-related.

"I think what I can say with a certain degree of confidence is there are definitely gang undertones to this," Bernardis said. "Whether this is gang-related, that is still under investigation."

Two hours after the fatal shooting, police received a call about shots fired at an apartment complex in the 1700 block of Franklin Avenue, Eden said. At 9 a.m., a patrol officer found a bullet casing at the scene, Eden said.

No one was injured in that shooting, he said.

Saturday morning's slaying was the first in Yuba-Sutter since March, when three men — 37-year-old Jesus Arreguin-Cardenas, his 31-year-old brother Jose and 27-year-old Manuel Robles-Basurto — were found shot to death inside a unit at the Malvern Apartment in the 1400 block of North Beale Road in Linda.

The last slaying in Yuba City was Jan. 20, when 17-year-old Alex Smith was stabbed and killed during a party in the 900 block of Frederick Avenue.
