Man charged with shooting 4-year-old son
Charges have been filed against the man Detroit police said shot his 4-year-old stepson while cleaning his handgun this week.
Migueal Russ, 23, of Detroit was charged with two counts of child abuse and one count of careless discharge in the Wednesday afternoon shooting in the 11700 block of North Martindale, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. Russ is expected to be arraigned Friday in Detroit’s 36th District Court.
If he is convicted, Russ could face prison sentences of four years on each of the child abuse charges and up to two years on the other charge.
"How many children need to be shot or killed for people to understand that guns should not be around children? This is not rocket science," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a news release today.
Detroit Police spokeswoman Sgt. Eren Stephens said the boy, who was struck in the shoulder, remains in stable condition at a local hospital.
