Webster signed to play with Washington
SEATTLE -- Seattle high school basketball standout Martell Webster said Tuesday he will make himself available for the NBA draft but won't hire an agent.
Webster -- a 6-foot-7 guard projected as a lottery pick in the June 28 draft -- has signed a letter of intent with the University of Washington. By not hiring an agent, he can withdraw his name before June 21 and not lose his college eligibility.
"My decision to make myself available for the draft at this time has been a very difficult decision because of my strong desire to attend the University of Washington and play for coach (Lorenzo) Romar," Webster said in a statement. "I have tremendous respect for coach Romar both as a coach and as a person."
Romar was out of town and unavailable for comment, a UW athletics spokesman said. Last month, Huskies junior guard Nate Robinson made himself eligible for the draft.
Webster averaged 27.7 points and 10 rebounds last season for Seattle Prep. He was selected to play in the McDonald's All-America game and the Jordan Classic. He's the second prep player from Washington to be named to Parade Magazine's All-America first team.
Marvin Williams, who recently declared for the draft after one season at North Carolina, was the first.
"It has also been my dream since childhood to someday pursue a career in the NBA and challenge myself against the best players in the world," Webster said. "If I decide after going through this process that the time is not right for me to go to the NBA, I will look forward to attending the University of Washington."
Webster is expected to attend the pre-draft camp in Chicago next month.
