Scientology is a high control cult that basically preys on the weak and vulnerable. It’s a pretty successful cult started by a science fiction writer named L. Ron Hubbard. The only reason it has received any attention is due to several famous members (John Travolta, Tom Cruise, Goldie Hawn, Dustin Hoffmann, etc.). Stars like Tom Cruise etc. are actually in pretty vulnerable positions if you think about it. Very few people understand what it is like to be a star and having your life constantly under a microscope. If you think about the quite surreal life these people lead it is quit easy to see how this could make them vulnerable to cults like scientology. In the same way as a drug addict these people need something to give them meaning.

It’s actually a pretty good scam – you have to pay certain amounts of money to get to the next “advanced” levels. Basically the higher you get the more they supposedly tell you about the secrets to life, etc. Scientology sucks the money from its members and people like Travolta, Cruise have given the “church” so much fucking money it’s unbelievable. There are actually set amounts one has to give. So for example in order to rid your body of bad spirits left by Xenu, you have to pay a total of $360,000.

One of the things that’s really quite clever is their Anti-psychology and anti-medication stances (see recent Tom Cruise statements and pamphlets encouraging people to stop taking anti-depressants). If someone has some kind of psychological or emotional issue, they would normally go to a psychologist and/or get medication. Scientology, by opposing them, provides the emotional crutch these vulnerable people need and at the same time, these people have no real chance of getting cured.

Most, if not if not all members are completely controlled by Scientology. Their entire lives revolve around the cult and usually only associate themselves with other members.

Some of their basic wacky beliefs is that a being known as Xenu gathered all lifeforms or other beings in the galaxy and brought them to earth to be exterminated by hydrogen bombs. The souls of these beings left their bodies and attached to life-forms on earth. All humans actually have the souls of these murdered creatures. Once you reach the most advanced levels of scientology you’re supposedly able to experience the hydrogen murders and go through what your “soul” went through millions of years ago.

Couple other quick beliefs:

XENU HAS ENSLAVED THE HUMAN BEINGS
WITH HIS EVIL PSYCHIC INFLUENCE

75.000.000 YEARS AGO
THE CUNNING ALIEN EMPEROR XENU
INFESTED HUMAN BEINGS' SOULS WITH
HUNDREDS OF ANNOYING INVISIBLE SPIRITS WHICH MAKES THEM VULNERABLE TO
ILLNESS AND SORROWS

Scientology is a new religious movement that was established in 1951 as a pseudoscientific alternative to psychotherapy by science-fiction author L. Ron Hubbard, then recharacterized by him in 1953 as an "applied religious philosophy".

The term Scientology is a trademark of the Religious Technology Center, which licenses its use and the copyrighted works of Hubbard to the controversial Church of Scientology. The Church presents itself as a religious non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging development of the human spirit, and providing counseling and rehabilitation programs as an alternative to psychiatry, which Scientologists believe to be a barbaric and corrupt profession [1]. Church spokespeople attest that Hubbard's teachings (called "technology" or "tech" in Scientology terminology) have freed them from addictions, depression, learning disabilities, mental illness and other problems.

However, the Church of Scientology has attracted much controversy and criticism. Critics—including government officials of various countries—have characterized the Church as an unscrupulous commercial organization, and it is often described as a cult that harasses critics and exploits its members. Critics also argue many of the Church's controversial actions are a direct reflection of Hubbard's teachings.

Despite the similarity between their names, there is no connection between Scientology and the Church of Christ, Scientist, better known as "Christian Science".

Cults are a trip. I was fascinated by Jim Jones for awhile and wrote a long paper about him and mind control for school a few years back.

All religions are cults if you think about it. Christianity being the most successful.
