The San Francisco African American Historical & Cultural Society
("the Society") is a membership based non-profit organization. Its mission is to collect,preserve and present art, artifacts and written materials that reflects the history and culture of African Americans in San Francisco and the Bay Area. The Society also sponsors and supports research,publication and educational activities related to the history and culture of African America.
Founded in 1955, the Society is the oldest institution of its type in the western United States. The Society was the first systematic collector
of archival, published and artifactual sources depicting the religious,cultural, commercial and political life of San Francisco's African American community and the ways that community has contributed
to the broader society. The Society's holdings are a resource for scholars,students,geneaologists,curators,filmmakers and publishers.
The Society tells the story of San Francisco's African American community through exhibitions,guided tours,lectures,symposia,public programs and printed materials. The Society is also available to consult with public and private parties interested in developing a greater understanding
and appreciation of the history and culture of San Francisco's African American community.
The Society's Museum and its Library / Archives are both located in
San Francisco. The Museum is at Fort Mason Center and the Library / Archives is at the African American Art and Culture Complex. The Museum is open to the public for a nominal admission fee. Admission to and the use of the Library / Archives are free.
