Witnesses and family members told police that Smith went into the water at Sharp Park State Beach to rescue the dog in heavy surf and was knocked down by a large wave. They were unable to reach her, and officers responding to an emergency call found Smith face down 35 feet from shore, police said.
Smith was taken to Seton Medical Center in Daly City and was pronounced dead soon afterward, police said. The dog made it back to shore on its own.
