How the fuck do I go about get a sample cleared? Do I contact the record label by phone, letter? Do I contact the publishers? The artist? I aint never done this before

Go through the publisher at ASCAP, BMI (or whatever their publishing is). Find out the publishing name and call.

If it's ASCAP here's the number Homie.

Just use it. Once a song is made the song becomes free to sample to the public. I would sample any song if I thought it was tight enough. No artist is going to care about it and if they do they probably should not be making music in the first place.

Fuck it man, just use it...or have someone replay it. Unless your shit is moving weight...I don't think it would be worth it for anyone to go through litigations over.

Is it an obvious sample ?

Naw, Brugh take the time to do this right. If you don't do that, what you in this game for? Ya feel?

It's time we independent artist step our game up...what I mean by that is, everything. Not just in the booth and in writing, but everything in general.

Back in 1999 I called Bad Boy Entertainment once trying to clear a sample off Ma$e (was gonna use a line of his...sample it into the hook), needless to say I never recorded the song, but I was told by the people there at Bad Boy that I was admired, being an independent artist, building a label...taking the right steps. I talked to person there for about 20 minutes.

He was real intriged and told me to keep staying on the right path with it and never give up. Yada yada yada...

He then redirected me to the publishers at ASCAP...that's when I registered and became an ASCAP member.

Later in the day, I started to play back in my mind the conversation I had with this down to earth dude, then it hit me!

After going through a few assistants at the label and finally getting to the dude I talked to, I remember dude's first words when he answered...

he said, "Sean Combs"

LOL!!!!! I shit you not, my friend.

In confession, I tried to call again the next day, but to no avail.
