Yeah we need an official Saints thread! So we'll start if off like this...
Quarterback Aaron Brooks of the New Orleans Saints, defensive end Lance Johnstone of the Minnesota Vikings and punt returner Brian Westbrook of the Philadelphia Eagles are the NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the seventh week of the 2003 season (Oct. 19-20).
Brooks helped the Saints to their second consecutive win, a convincing 45-17 road-victory over the NFC South division rival Atlanta Falcons. New Orleans, which improved to within a game of .500 at 3-4, posted its highest point total since a 51-27 triumph against the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 21, 1976, thanks in large part to the play of their strong-armed passer.
Brooks had a career-high and Week 7 NFL-best 148.2 passer rating, completing 23 of 30 attempts for 352 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. A native of Newport News, Virginia, Brooks topped 250 passing yards in a game for the 20th time in his career, tying Bobby Hebert and Archie Manning for most in club history.
With the score tied 14-14 after one quarter, Brooks led the Saints to second-quarter touchdown drives of 78, 52 and 68 yards to give New Orleans a 35-14 halftime advantage they would not relinquish.
"I said when the season started that I thought Aaron made great strides during the offseason," said Saints head coach Jim Haslett. "I think he will continue to get better and better as we go."
In his fifth season out of Virginia, this is Brooks' second Player of the Week Award. He also was honored in Week 7 in 2002 after leading the Saints to a comeback victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
