Without these systems individuals wouldn't be motivated, innovative, and productive. To use a cliche, "It's a dog eat dog world."

No it wasn't. The living conditions were horrible and nobody had any freedom to make any changes. They were ruled by a tyrant that would do things on a whim. If he felt like killing you he would. If he felt like fucking your daughter he would. If he felt like destroying natural habitats he would (that's for all you tree huggers).

Did you just make that statistic up? I can tell you right off the top of my head that Saddam has killed hundreds of thousands, if not millions of his own citizens and there's all types of information that would substantiate that claim.
