That shit was sick. I've never been to a better hip-hop show in my life. There were no weak acts, except maybe the host, but she was pretty good. The crowd seemed a little uptight, or maybe they just were blazed and didn't feel like partying, but they should have been more energetic in my opinion.I loved the whole bock party vibe. It was cool to see the people driving on the 80/101 overpasses trying to get a glimpse at what was going on. This was some real hip-hop shit, with little to no filler.
The East coast veterans knew how to rock the house.
I would have liked to see the bay better represented at a show like this... Equipto and Nickatina only did 2 songs... there should have been more hip-hop and less down time in between acts. I also would have liked to see some freestyle jams by the bigger artists that were there. It's like they have the sound system playing, so they easily could have had MCs rocking the mic nonstop.
It was cool. I got to meet Supernat and Zion I... really cool people
Here's what I remember (I was high as hell)
Busta Rhymes- Woo Ha, Make it Clap, Break Ya neck, Fire it Up. Busta always is energetic, so it was cool to see him do his thing. I saw Redman chillin on top of the sound system watching his set.
Method Man and Redman- METHOD MAN, I'll Be that, How High, You, Pick it up, Da Goodness, Rockwilder, Let's Get Dirty, Diggy Doc. They were smoking blunts on stage, throwing water in they crowd, having water thrown on them, climbing up on the amps, doing pullups and swinging around on the stage tent. DJ dice and mathematics were on the wheels of steel i think. Fun set.
Ghostface and Rae (Cuban Linx)- Ice Cream, Verbal Intercourse, Holla, Nutmeg, Cream, Can it be that it was all so simple, Child's Play, Cher Chez la Ghost.
Dead Prez- Hip-Hop (one of the best groups so far)
Some group affiliated with dead prez- they were cool
Q bert- scratching and shit. Q-bert is the shit, but he needed some real MC's to jam with. he had some fake-ass singer and an average MC with him. It wasn't bad, but Q-bert could get some better singers and rappers for when he's up on stage.
Equipto and Nickatina- Jungle... At first I was hyped to see nickatina, but then I was let down when they only did a couple songs. But then again, I've seen nickatina before anyway, so it was cool to check out the other acts more.
Guru- you know my steez. I was expecting a little more from guru, but he was still cool
Dj Kool- Let me clear my throat
Supernatural- 3 Words incorporated into a freestyle, objects in the audience used in a freestyle, different MC styles used in a freestyle (slick rick, Raekwon, Notorious, Busta Rhymes, MOP?). Standard Supernat routine, but it's always different since he works with his surroundings. Security moved a barricade during his first song, and he started rapping about that for example.
Zion I- some sick shit I didn't recognize. They got the crowd hyped.
Crown City Rockers- cool live instrumental grooves with a good MC… this should be the future of hip hop….meaning there should be more live bands and shit
I wish this kind of shit happened more often. There needs to be all day jam sessions in the parks and whatnot. I didn't feel bad for the 40 dollar ticket, since I wanted to support events like this coming to the bay. If shit is profitable, it'll happen again. I was there for like six hours at LEAST, too. It was worth it
