Shit, half of them hate their jobs and just don't have many options for anything else after they committed so much time to getting out on the road.

There was a similar situation to that in these old apartments I lived in. Dude shot a Detroit police officer, hopped a bus 6 miles north to Clinton Twp and holed up in one of his friends apartments... ended up putting the AK to his own skull before the cops could get him. Boy was like 17 I think.
