Police: Pleasant Hill Gunman Killed

PLEASANT HILL, Calif. -- Police have called off a shelter-in-place for an area near the Sunvalley Mall in Pleasant Hill after determining a gunman who had barricaded himself in a nearby home was dead.


The shots were fired at about 10:50 a.m. near the Sunvalley Mall.

No officers were injured, though one person was taken to hospital. Police have not released the victim's identity or condition.

At about 2:10 p.m., the shelter-in-place area was expanded to include houses on Christine and Audrey Courts and continues to be in effect for the blocks of Audrey and Baylor lanes, according to Pleasant Hill police.

People in these areas have been advised to go inside and close all windows and doors until at least 4 p.m. Residents are also advised by police to stay off the phone except for emergency purposes.

Both directions of Contra Costa Boulevard between Golf Club Road and Taylor Boulevard have been closed. Baylor and Audrey lanes were also closed to vehicles and pedestrians.

Negotiators are attempting to speak with the suspect by bullhorn.

The Sunvalley Mall has not been evacuated and remains open.

PLEASANT HILL — A tense, five-hour police standoff ended Sunday afternoon when a SWAT officer fired a single, fatal shot at a man who had shot at officers throughout the day from inside a house near Sun Valley Mall, police said.

In the end, police deployed tear gas through the front door, and the man retreated to the backyard with an assault rifle when the sharpshooter killed him, said Pleasant Hill police Lt. Dan Connelly.

The suspect, whose identity was not immediately released, died about 4:05 p.m., ending a long stalemate on Audrey Lane involving several police agencies, the Contra Costa County sheriff's office and the California Highway Patrol.

From just before 11 a.m., when police responded to a report of a man with a rifle, until the suspect's death, at least four series of gunshots erupted on the street, three of them directed at police.

No officers were injured, although one unidentified victim was hospitalized with superficial injuries, then released, Connelly said. A dispute preceded the standoff, he said.

Police deployed a SWAT team and sniper and used flash-bang grenades and tear gas in a bid to smoke out the suspect, who responded only with gunfire.

"All day, after he had been barricaded in the house and officers had made numerous attempts to contact him ... each time he responded by shooting at officers," said Connelly.

the mall across Contra Costa Boulevard, came at 10:51 a.m. Police responded and a brief exchange of gunfire followed. At least two more shots were fired though the home's garage around 1:50 p.m.

"We were just standing there watching, and suddenly there was a 'bang, bang, bang,' and then a 'Get back!'" said Luke Rockwell, who was viewing the police action.

About 3:35 p.m., two loud bangs could be heard, followed by smoke rising from the standoff area. Police negotiators using a bullhorn were attempting to talk to the man. Members of the media were moved back away from the house.

During the standoff, police ordered nearby residents to remain indoors. The order was issued for Audrey Lane, Christine Court, Baylor Lane and the 1800 block of Contra Costa Boulevard.

Police shut down all surrounding streets and the mall's western parking lot. Several of the streets remained closed into Sunday evening.

I know man...Ren was a solid dude tho, been knowing him since like 93..

He was just like me...we hated cops...but I don't think I'd put myself in that kind of situation..

shooting at cops isn't even cool though. My sister married a cop, and I can assure you if her husband was killed by somebody... I got dudes in county and state pen that would do me a solid and make sure that death was avenged. Some cops are complete dicks, but others are just doing their jobs. Have families and all that. Shit, half of them hate their jobs and just don't have many options for anything else after they committed so much time to getting out on the road.

There was a similar situation to that in these old apartments I lived in. Dude shot a Detroit police officer, hopped a bus 6 miles north to Clinton Twp and holed up in one of his friends apartments... ended up putting the AK to his own skull before the cops could get him. Boy was like 17 I think.

Your homie shot at the police. One of them returned a single shot that killed him. Thats goin' out like a sav?:confused: Not exactly somethin' I'd be proud of. Thats a fucked up way to go.
