Pittsburg Teen Dies After Confrontation With Deputy

PITTSBURG -- The teenage suspect was shot by Contra Costa County sheriff's deputies early Tuesday morning after a routine traffic stop turned into a chase followed by a physical struggle that led to a deputy using deadly force.At 1:45 a.m., two deputies patrolling in the Bay Point area tried to stop a Ford Mustang that was driving erratically on Balclutha Street. The vehicle fled, leading the deputies on a chase into the city of Pittsburg where the suspect vehicle stopped in the driveway of a residence on Galleon Street off Schooner.The suspect driving the Mustang jumped out of the car and ran into the backyard of the house. One of the deputies pursued the suspect behind the house, where the shooting took place."The driver attacked the deputy and the two were involved in a fight," said Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department Capt. Dave Pascoe during a press conference regarding the incident Tuesday afternoon. "During the struggle, the deputy fired one round at the driver. The driver was taken to Sutter Delta Hospital in Antioch, where he later died."The deputy was treated for injuries on the scene. The driver has been identified as 17-year-old Steffan Day of Pittsburg. Pasco said the deputy who fired on the suspect is a six-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office. The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave.There were two other men in the vehicle who were taken into custody at the time of the incident. So far, there is no word as to whether they are still being held or if they are being charged with any crimes.The case is being investigated by the Pittsburg Police Department, the Sheriff's Office and the Contra Costa County district attorney's office.
