Yall remember mixtape mondays? we should start somethin like that again to keep constant new cuts comin along. If beats were provided, which of you artists would be down to throw some vocals over em every now and then? seems like theres only one, two or three releases each year from around here... not even enough... thoughts?

Not viable in this day and age, unfortunately. Even for a borrowed beat--thats still at least $100 or more (in payment for the rapper, or lost revenue for the engineer) you're giving away every time you throw out a mixtape track.

It'd be cool if someone would reach out NorthWest Artists via MySpace and get a good collection of new/recent tracks....then every week, release a whole smattering of them. It doesn't have to be from an Upcoming Album to be "new" to a lot of people.

I personally don't have the time/energy to go to 20 different myspace pages to hear 20 new songs.....and even if i did, I still wouldn't be able to burn them to CD and take them with me. And i sure as FUCK am not going to be buying 20 new CDs any time soon!

rappers who are really into the music and what they do should be willing to lay down a verse here and there to keep people wanting more....it doesnt even have to be a full song, anything would be nice to hear!!!

We need to get a few studios involved in a few different NW locales to donate a day for cat's to get in the studio together and put it down. It would be some good promo for a studio...they could throw a BBQ on that day or something and invite local artist's to come out and get down! Just an idea!

Its an idea. But what do the engineers/studio-owners get out of it? "Free Recording Time" isn't great promo. "1/2 Price", maybe. Bottom line is, somebody's gotta be putting up $$$, or the end result will be poorly-mixed crap featuring a bunch of people nobody's ever heard of.

I hate to be a wet blanket about it......but the best beginning is not exclusive tracks. The best way to start is by just gathering new tracks, period, a la Kay Slay. The exclusives will come later, as the series gets more popular and the artists/labels jockey for position.

If by "mixtape" you mean about 4 songs a week....sure. But you are not going to get 17 brand new songs every week unless you're paying some serious $$$$. There is absolutely no incentive to do so. ESPECIALLY if your primary place to spread it is Siccness, which has <100 regular (twice a week or more) posters/readers.

Trust me.....the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything is 42; and the way to create a mixtape series is drawing 90%+ from pre-existing songs (exclusive remixes, non-single album tracks, freestyles)......NOT this West Coast Mixtape bullshit, where you steal a bunch of beats and record garbage.

Doo Wop, Kay Slay, Cutmaster C, DJ Clue, DJ Drama, Kid Capri, DJ Dolla Bill, Funkmaster Flex....they all do it the right way. I honestly cannot think of one DJ out there that does something like what you're proposing. Only labels do that, and they make $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ doing it. They don't do it for promo only.

I agree is most cases! The trouble is...the NW is going to have to come together to create a collective buzz before anyone out here can make any money.
The motivation would be to further the scene as a whole and I see that as a decent investment for people who stand to gain from NW music's success!
Studio time is just that...time! Something that we all have a bit of for free if the cause is just and the mind is willing!
All this "I need to get some money for my time" thinking is the downfall of the NW scene thus far in my eyes and the only solution is a drastic shift towards unity in pursuit of a common national acknowledgment and respect. A showcase of the best of the NW is a great way to show the rest of the country what we have going on out here and a few initial discounts (as you suggested) or pro-bono moves, would be a great way to invest in the future.
I agree that the details are a bit off, but, they are merely preliminary logistics. All things that can be re-thought and molded to fit the situation of everyone involved. I say we keep this discussion open to opinion and solution because it's a good start to progress... not for our individual selves, but for the whole scene, and in turn, for the individuals involved!

Let's get it figured and make it happen! I'm down like Jackie.....awe nevermind!

take it and run with it... anybody got any suggestions? maybe get a few people to throw in some beats and have it be a contest like thing, winner gets the beat for whatever project they want? that would kind of even out the money part of it... i dunno

That's cool.....but what does it pay?

Until someone--and I don't mean Random Investor XYZ, I mean a known figure--puts up a few grand and declares: "ALBUM ON ____ DATE. 100% GUARANTEED. Send me tracks, I'll sort through em, then press the CD.".....and then delivers, EXACTLY on that date (NOT ONE SINGLE PUSH-BACK), with a high-quality, well-balanced product.....Until we have a DJ Khaled-like, DJ Kay Slay-like Mixtape DJ, who we can look on the calendar and see a planned release, and have that date actually be the date of the release, every single time......we'll stay in limbo, with Label vs Label and limited cooperation. That's what you call a hand-to-throat existence.

I feel you on that! Mostly!
But would you have everyone just sit back and wait for someone to fly along like superman and save the scene, or would you have them exhaust all avenues and get hands on, and MAKE things happen? "Collectively we can change the world"...that's seriously real talk fam!
You get enough mothafuckas' working towards the same goal and on the same page you can do ANYTHING!

I'm not talking albums, mind you.....I'm talking Mixtapes. Compilations are inherently flawed, because they always feature 8-12 songs from the label putting them out, with a few extra tracks here and there.

Having all albums and nothing else, is like having all Coke/Pepsi and no Mountain Dew, Dr Pepper, 7Up, Iced Tea, Minute Maid, etc. Sometimes, people just aren't in the mood to listen to all one artist/group. As much as Chocolate and Cookie Dough might sell, we need all 31 Baskin/Robbins flavors, or as many of em as possible, one one mixtape series.
