i heard the other day that clearchannel is trying to focus more on a national market and less on a local market this may make it a little easier in the future...

as far as record sales - yeah they are slumping and the bay is the bootleg mecca. i think more people bootleg in the bay than anywhere.

imo if u a new artist trying to get heard dont just rely on commercial radio or blame big von. make some moves for yourself and youll get there sooner or later

welcome to 5 years ago. kmel aint gonna do it. and besides jacka's street album is at 1600 units soundscan and he had a single on the radio in full rotation. thats the problem. von shows us love and then the fans and what not fail the artist. evryone on jacka dick but aint nobody buy the record. why you think von or who ever up there should give the bay area artist a grip of spins when every time they do the fans dont bum rush the stores and support the artist to make them bigger? radio is a business and there is no point to help an artist when it doesnt translate into money. time is money on the radio. and when you aint turning it around and bringing it back, your song is a waste of bay area radio time.

SO ALL STARVING ARTISTS CAN THANK THE FANS FOR NOT SUPPORTING THE ALBUMS AND NOT BUYING THE MUSIC. THATS WHY WE GET NO PLAY. IT AINT JUST VON AND SCOTTY FOX.

MESSY MARV DRAPED UP & CHIPP 556 444 5,311

JACKA STREET ALBUM 368 194 1,613

KEAK DA SNEAK & SAN QUINN WELCOME TO SCOKLAND 322 358 4,455

1st number is the sales this week, 2nd number is sales last week, and last number is total for the album.

YOU TAKE THOSE NUMBERS AND SET THEM SIDE BY SIDE WITH ANY OTHER ARTIST OUTSIDE OF THE BAY ON ANY LEVEL AND YOU WILL SEE WHY THE BAY GETS ZERO LOVE ON THE RADIO AND THE OUTSIDERS GET LOVE.

its not rocket science. i want to hear the bay on the radio, but it wont happen til we get the fans back on our side and push like it used to.
In the case of the artists you mentioned here, there's one thing they all have in common. They release way to many discs in a small time span. I mean in the case of jacka, he must have had like 5 discs with his name on it that came out this year.

They would probably have better sales if they stepped back and consolidated. When they release that much stuff even a fan can get confused about what's on the market, and if it's got recycled tracks that's even worse. You start to figure it's just gonna be some filler and recycled material.

Dont blame the fans entirely for this.

Radio is a billion dollar business not some game and at the end of the day they are going to do what ever makes them profitable. If playing bay music was going to help them out and hit the key demographics they need for there advertisers who pay the most money then they will do that. There advertisers are looking for a certain gender and age at the times there commercials are played and that is the song choices they need to play at that time.

So whos problem is that? Maybe there putting out all these albums becuz that is there only real source of revenue. If an artist was selling big records then they would not have to keep putting out albums over and over.

I really hope the new younger generation take notice and see whats really going on these days in bay rap and stay focused on school and sports. My generation came up and seen all the artist from the 90's having real money, being on a real label with a budget, selling real records, getting good money from there guest apperances on other albums, and having more then 250 people at there shows that they did nt know. Seeing that made my generation want to be rappers and in the music business.

well I can certainly say that for myself, i rarely check for anything by mess or jacka because of the constant flooding of recycled and side projects (or md or thizz etc).

I'll buy tear gas and anything else actually considered an album.

its fucked up that the radio don't play enough bay shit. i remember back in the early 2000's when friday nights on kmel would be full of bay music. they also were doin those battles which i think helped artist like mistah fab and locksmith get noticed for their skills. back then mutha fuckas were really pushin their shit, doin shows, and just bein out and about lettin people know about their music. regardless if they get radio play or not im gonna stay supportin bay artist and actually buying their cd's. but i do wish big von would take it back to when atleast on friday nights the bay stayed in rotation.

yeah, i feel what you're sayin, but it ain't the same. they used to have bay area artist in the studio choppin it up and lettin the people know what they got comin out. now we just hear the same bay songs over and over. back then they would be playin new shit that most people hadn't even heard yet. i ain't hatin, im just sayin we all, (fans, artist, and radio) need to come together and make this a real movement.

That shit was ridiculous, I would consider that somewhat of an exception to the rule though. He may have been a breakout success with that, but he was already famous from the hotboyz and the carter albums. On top of that, when someone does a gimmick that has a fair amount of success like this, people tend to try to copy the execution and what inevitably happens is each time that method is copied the level of success goes down a level. For instance there was a website a while back with a photo of a rabbit with a message that said "I'm poor if I dont get 1000000$ donated I will eat this rabbit". The first guy made close to a mill, and subsequently a whole army of sites came out with various animals and similar messages. Low and behold each new site made less and less money until it was so oversaturated that no one cared anymore.

At this point in time, Frontline got me ready to buy their new CD day one. With jacka, I'm a little burnt out on him at this point. I'll buy tear gas eventually.

Remember it's just my opinion though, I'm not pretending to be any kind of an expert on music marketing, but I am a fan and with that I know what I'm buying and what I'm not buying.

if people played there part and made quality music all the time, people in high positions would take artist and the region more seriously
Ima have to disagree.. cuz its alotta hot niggaz that should be on the radio but never will due to many political reasons.. people in "high positions" takes us serious when the radio takes us serious.. thats the first thing execs ask for.. "BDS" dictates who u are to them..

quit blaming others for your lack of success.

obviously if the radio doesnt feel you then a new avenue needs to be pursued. mixing your own music on pro tools doesnt cut it. i think alot of artists need to go to sound 101 and figure out how to have a quality track put together from begining to end. yeah, radio is about money. if you cant push units, they arent pushing you. if rap is your future, dont have kids.

The folks at 106 should be more concerned with keeping their own jobs. Word is the urban stations are beginning to cut staff considerably across the nation.

Besides, they do play bay music. I would not complain, but figure out more innovative ways to get your music out there. Corporate radio is not the place it once was to break new music for new underground artists. Deregulation of radio monopoly control made sure of that. Thank your congress.

I understand the business politics and economics involved with the industry. I just felt compelled to make this statement. I have been very impressed with the music the Bay has been coming with as of late. I've always wanted to believe if the music was good, Your business was strait and determination was there you would be successful.

Radio is important but people need to realize that it's more stations out there that will play your shit. KMEL is a powerhouse station that can be political, but yall cant forget about the internet, college radio, club spins, word of mouth etc? Its too many avenues to just worry about 1 station. At the end of the day, as long as people push RAW product, the grind & quality of music will always prevail.
