Well....for some reason, i can't get my windows update thing to work...i really need to update everything, but when ever i try to connect my production computer to the internet, it just tends to crash a few moments later (especially on microsoft websites).

1. Is there a way i can get all the latest updates on a cd, somehow?? If anyone knows of a torrent or something, that'll be cool.

if not..

2. If i reboot, will the stuff on my second hard drive get erased at all? I just want to make sure, i'm thinking no. Hopefully.

3. Does anyone know what could be wrong?

I bought a program (sibelius, actually bought it) and it works fine on my laptop, but it doesn't on my production computer. They told me to update my system, and other stuff...and yes it is sp2.

Thanks.

Are you running a Firewall? Disable it and run Windows Update again. Also, check the Security Settings in your IE Browser, disable them and try running Windows Update again. Also, you can only access Windows Update from Internet Explorer.

If the above fails,

Try Yahoo/Google and Troubleshoot your issue. Chances of someone having the same issue as you, are large, so you may find an answer.

Also, try contacting the creator of http://www.blackviper.com and email him, he will be able to solve your issue.

If you can't troubleshoot the issue, you may need to reboot. If you need to reboot, just back up any important data prior to doing so, and you'll be fine.

Edit: The Data on your Second Hard drive and on your main Hard drive will only be removed if you delete it during the Reboot. Which is what I recommend if you come down to rebooting as the only option, which again, is why you want to back up your important files! When I reboot, I like to delete all of the Partitions, and then create a new Partition. When you delete the partitions, you completely remove everything. And then you create a new Partition. What this does, is it removes everything and re-installs Windows OS / System Files on the new Partition. It's a clean install. This is why backing up your data before hand is so important. Usually one or two DVD+R's will be all you will need. If you have an external hard drive, just make sure the files on it are protected. I'm sure you can use an external drive to back up files also.

Rebooting should be your last resort, so try troubleshooting your issue first.

Try this, it's a wing but it might be worth the try:

After "Defaulting" all of your Security Settings in IE and verifying your Firewall (If any) isn't part of the issue. Perform the following:

Start>Run>Services.msc

Scroll down and locate the "Workstation" Service. Verify that it is running.

Locate "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" (BITS)

Double click the Entry and in the new Window under General Tab, make sure the Startup type is set to Manual. In the same window, click "Start" under Server Status.

If the process starts successfully, close all windows and run Windows Update.

However, if you get an Error message after attempting to start the process. Perform the following:

Restart.

Start>Run>Cmd

Type & Enter the following:

rd /q /s "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader"

Note: Make sure to leave a space between the commands, as an example, the underscore represents where the spaces should be (rd_/q_/s_"%).

Next line,

Type & Enter the following:

net start BITS

Note: If successful, BITS should now start.

Next,

Close the Command Prompt.

Restart.

Start>Run>Services.msc

By now, the Background Intelligent Transfer Service should be running. Check the Entry again to verify this.

Windows Update should now work.

If you still are having errors, perform these tasks:

In Windows Explorer/My Computer, set your Folder Options to Show Hidden Files & Folders and then locate the following directory:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader

Delete the two files in that folder.

Next,

Start>Run>Services.msc

Locate Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

Double click the Entry and Start the Service.

If successful, close all windows and run Windows Update.

If all else fails, try Restoring your System Settings back to a date before you had these issues.

Peace.

Thanks man, i don't have the computer by me right now, i moved it back to my house, but, i'l give it a try tomorrow. I've tried restoring my computer to an earlier date, and that didn't work because, the thing is, i never had connected it to the internet before, never, so i wouldn't know if it worked then, or what caused it to not work now. But again, thanks, those tips might just save the day.

Okay i've tried that, didn't work. When ever i plug the ethernet cable into the computer, the fan gives a loud -persistent whine...don't know if that could be it, that website states that, he no longer wants to be contacted for isolated technical issues...oh well.

Well, how about a new motherboard, would that require a reboot?? All my on board usb ports are fried. No fix for that is there?

Sounds like some serious hardware issues. How do you know your USB Ports are fried? Windows just doesn't recognize them when you plug anything in? Or because of the Fan issue? You can replace your USB Ports, for very cheap.

I would recommend you back up any important information. Boot your Windows XP/Vista/OS Disc by inserting it into the drive and restarting your computer and accessing the boot screen. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Make sure to do a Full Install. Not a Quick Restore/Install. And be sure to delete the current Partitions and then create a NEW Partition. And then follow with the Install.

After the Clean Install, you want to access the Internet ASAP and download all of your Updates. From there you can customize things and set up your music software, drivers, plug-ins, etc.

It should not be difficult to setup your local network with Windows XP/Vista machines. It's almost all Automated and your OS Applications disc from the manufacturer should have the drivers for your Network.

If you still have problems even after you do a clean install by deleting the old partitions and setting a new partition, then you should either contact the manufacturer or take your computer in somewhere and get it looked at and fixed.

Sorry to hear your having such difficult problems, I'm sorry I couldn't be of much help.

But if the Reboot works, then it's all worth it, and you will know for sure if it's a hardwired issue, or just a bogus system install / driver malfunction / soft issue.

Peace.

Description
Windows XP Service Pack 3 (XP SP3) fixes a range of bugs and adds new features to Windows XP. The file is a large download and can be applied to any version of Windows XP Home, Professional, TabletPC or Media Center (32 bit only). In addition, it doesn't matter what XP patches you have previously applied to your system, SP3 will update any unpatched, partially patched or completely updated system (it includes all previously released patches, updates and features of Service Pack 1 and 2). Keep in mind that new patches made available after Service Pack 3 was released will still need to be applied.

Important notes: Microsoft advise uninstalling any beta or Release Candidate versions before installing this final release. Do not install Service Pack 3 on systems running Microsoft Dynamics RMS (this is a specialised version of XP used in Retail sales and will not affect most home or network users - see Microsoft Dynamics RMS (opens in new window). The file will download directly from Microsoft's servers - you may want to shorten the file name.

The advantage of this full download is that it can be used on any system - plus it doesn't require an Internet connection to install. You can download SP3, copy it to disc or a portable drive and use it on multiple PCs. Alternatively, since the file is so huge, you can download SP3 on a fast Internet connection and use it to update a PC with a slow or non-existent connection.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes the following:
  • All previous security patches and fixes released for Windows XP.
  • All enhancements and new features that were included with Windows XP SP1 and Windows XP SP2
  • Only two new features have been added: Black Hole Router Detection Windows and Network Access Protection (NAP).
  • The following are already available for Windows XP in stand-alone updates. Windows XP SP3 includes them by default (System administrators must choose to install each of these updates): MMC 3.0, MSXML6, Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 v2, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.5, IPsec Simple Policy Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP, Digital Identity, Management Service (DIMS), Peer Name Resolution Protocol (PNRP) 2.1, Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2).
  • From the Release Notes: "Microsoft is not adding significant functionality from newer versions of Windows, such as Windows Vista, to Windows XP through XP SP3. For instance, Windows XP SP3 does not include Windows Internet Explorer 7, although Windows XP SP3 does include updates to both Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7, and it will update whichever version is installed on the computer. One notable exception is that, SP3 does include Network Access Protection (NAP)."
To download the complete 313MB SP3 for all English versions of Windows XP, click the download link at the top of this page.

This is true. Just make sure you get a warranty on any computer, especially one you get custom built.

I still recommend that you perform a clean install of your OS before giving up. Anything that is faulted software wise would be fixed, and it will give you some insight as to if it's a hardware fault or a software fault.

Peace.
