Dont know why I thought of this, but it made me think a little.
This was a bit prior to the release of AP
It was the sprite liquid mix tour this particular stop was in St. Louis. As far as main stream artists go,it was a star studded event at the time. Jay Z, NERD, pharrell, clipse, nappy roots, and others. There was a main stage, and a side stage. The only two performers I remember from the side stage were Talib Kweli (I know I fucking spelled it wrong probably) and Tech. Nappy Roots were on stage performing one of the biggest hits that year "Po Folks" and we were at the stage to watch Tech go on but you could see the amphitheater main stage well from the angle we were at. All of the sudden we heard that familiar "click click, stamina I be damn if I eva be...." People's heads turned so quick and they began to migrate from the main stage to the side stage area to see Tech's set, when they got there, they stayed, and after the set, a long line for Tech's autograph formed, all while a group currently at the top of the charts performed. If you love K.C. and our hometown product you couldn't help but feel proud, especially in STL where nelly was at the hieght of his popularity.
Thought,
A reality show, pitting artists lesser known, versus superstar artists, song for song, performing new material (platinum singles just wouldnt be fair for the lesser known artists) have the competition judged on different aspects of the the performance such as ,energy, crowd participation, quality of the performance, the track itself, etc. Have three judges, like a KRS One, an industry figure, not sure about the third but insert your idea there, have some type of online vote, considering that artists such as Tech, usually have huge internet followings, it would help to make the online vote atleast close to fair. Stars would definitely be born on a show like this. One other thought was how many of these "superstar artists" would accept the challenge? I remember the crowd booing at that show as Jay Z and all of rocafella walked around on stage holding thier nuts doing songs that hadn't been released yet, that no one knew and the energy just wasnt there to carry the performance. The only songs the crowd was into were songs that everyone knew the words to, because they had been drilled into our heads all summer, the prior radio play fueled that performance, and I really believed in the FTI movement, and still do.
Now the question.
Which artist recieves this phone call and says "yes".
Hi my name is blank from the fox network, we have this show and we would like you perform live some new and unreleased material in a televised competition, your first round opponent will be Tech N9ne, you will be judged on the following, insert criteria from above.
Who says yes, and even better who do you think could win.
