West-Side Rapper Slain By Police Following Traffic Stop
Case Will Be First Investigated By New Office

CHICAGO -- Three Chicago police officers opened fire on a well-known local rapper following a traffic stop on the West Side late Tuesday night, and a community wants answers.

This is the first shooting under investigation by the new police Office of Professional Standards.

Police said they pulled over Freddie Latee Wilson's beige Cadillac around 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of Madison and Lorel streets.

Minutes later, witnesses said, three officers opened fire on the 34-year-old Chicago man.

What prompted the shooting isn't clear, but investigators said a gun was recovered from the area.

"We're working on gathering evidence, and there will be a roundtable later tonight," said Officer Rosenzweig.

Community leaders said the story they are hearing doesn't match the official police account.

"Everything we are hearing contradicts reports," said one man.

Wilson, who went by the alias "The Saint" was an aspiring rapper, and the mother of his 8-year-old son is also a veteran of Chicago's hip-hop scene. Her name is Corinthia Fedrick, and her stage name is NewSense.

"They are trying to make him look bad because he has a criminal background," said Fedrick. "Well, what is a criminal background? Hell, we all got a criminal background."

Fedrick said she hopes the new police review authority will hold officers accountable for their actions.

"I prayed and prayed on it," she said. "With this new office, hopefully this will be the beginning of them bringing justice to these streets."

Pastors returned to the scene Tuesday, launching their own investigation.

"We are pro-police we are not anarchists. We believe crooks are crooks whether they wear blue jeans or uniforms," said one reverend.
