Rapper Dr. Dre Seeks Death Row Documents

Rapper and music producer Dr. Dre wants to investigate Death Row Records Inc. to determine how much the record company owes him for unpaid royalties from sales of his records.

Dr. Dre, whose real name is Andre Young, has already tried to sue the record label for royalties in several lawsuits. Last month, a California district court agreed to hear his appeal of the bankruptcy court's dismissal of one of those suits.

In the meantime, however, Young told the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Los Angeles in documents filed Tuesday that he needs to determine the value of a claim he holds against Death Row for unpaid royalties accruing after the record label's bankruptcy filing.

Young is asking for permission to obtain this information under Rule 2004 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, which allows bankruptcy judges to order companies to turn over documents related to their assets, liabilities and financial affairs.

The documents that Young's requesting include those with information related to contracts between him and the record label, revenue from the sale of his recordings and agreements to release his recordings as part of compilation albums.

He asked the bankruptcy court to make Death Row hand over the documents on Feb. 29 and to order its representatives to be available for deposition on March 7.

The dispute centers around Young's album "The Chronic," which was released in 1992. Young, who co-founded Death Row in 1991 with Marion "Suge" Knight and initially held a 50 percent ownership stake in the label, granted Death Row a license to distribute this album in exchange for royalties. In 1996, Young agreed to surrender his ownership interest in the label but retained his right to continue to receive royalties for all recordings released prior to the agreement.

Young has argued that Death Row hasn't lived up to its end of the bargain and further broke the contract by granting another company distribution rights to his recordings.

The court-appointed administrator running the record label's bankruptcy estate recently asked to sell Death Row's music-related assets to Warner Music Group Corp. for $25 million, subject to higher bids at auction. The sale includes "The Chronic" as well as several compilation albums featuring Dr. Dre's recordings, and Young also wants access to documents related to the marketing and sale efforts.

Death Row Records filed for Chapter 11 protection in April 2006, after struggling for several years amidst Knight's stints in prison. The label was also home to rappers Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur.

Dre made Death Row what it was, before it went to shit. Not takin' anything away from the other artists, but when Death Row first hit the scene, it was all Dre. Give the man his paper! He deserves it!

He got fucked over with Death Row not Ruthless. Like Jerry Heller said. If Ruthless was really ripping off their artist then why didn't Dre or Cube sue Eazy-R & Ruthless Records?

Now look how Dre's situation went with Suge after leaving Eazy. When Dre left Ruthless he was married 2 Michellé but the last time I looked that bitch was married 2 Suge Knight.

Its funny too when ya read old interviews with Eazy, and all the shit he spoke about Dre and suge and Death Row was 100% true. I remember The Source hating on Eazy for dropping Its On and saying he was only jealous of Dres success. Also every thing Cold 187 spoke about in Dont Bite the Phunk was true as well.

Also with the original NWA deal, of course Eazy is gonna be paid more because he is a member of the group and the owner of the record label. Cube and Dre were hella wrong...

I use 2 say that as well. Eazy was a solo artist, a group member & he was the company but them niggaz thought they should see more money then him. Now having D.O.C. sighn over his publishing for a watch & a dookie rope chain was fucked up but then again nobody forced D.O.C. to do it & he should of been on top of his business. I know he from Texas & that was some back woods country thinking right there. But Eazy was wrong for that though-as a friend but it wasn't illigel so oh well.

But yeah I remember many years ago when I was in HS & the Source was dissing Eazys Its On ep. The Source was on Death Rows nuts like XXL is on Interscopes nuts right now. U had to give Eazy E his props. When The Chronic blew up everyone I knew was talking bad about Eazy & I never could understand it. He dropped Its On & his first single was Real Muthaphukkin G's & it went platinum & that was @ a time when Death Row was on top( which was pretty diffacult to do) & everybody I knew was on they nuts hella hard. Eazy didn't sink when The Chronic blew up. He just came back hard as fuck.
