Raiders cut ties with Hall after 8 games

Buzz Up PrintALAMEDA, Calif. (AP)—DeAngelo Hall’s disappointing stint with the Oakland Raiders came to an early finish.

The Raiders waived Hall on Wednesday, less than eight months after they traded for the former Pro Bowl cornerback and gave him a $70 million contract.

The acquisition of Hall from Atlanta in March was a big part of Oakland’s plans to rebuild its defense. But the move has backfired. The Raiders gave up a second-round pick to acquire Hall and also gave him a seven-year contract.

But Hall never played up to that level. He struggled with nagging injuries throughout training camp and was picked on constantly by rookie receiver Eddie Royal and quarterback Jay Cutler in a 41-14 season-opening loss to Denver.

With most teams choosing to avoid throwing at standout cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha on the other side of the field, Hall became a frequent target. In his last game, he was beaten for a 37-yard touchdown pass to Michael Jenkins on the opening drive of a 24-0 loss to his former Falcons team.

In his eight games in Oakland, Hall was beaten 40 times for 552 yards on 66 passes thrown his way, according to data compiled by STATS LLC. He gave up more yards than any defender this season and was tied for third worst in catches allowed.
Hall said earlier this season it took him time to get used to Oakland’s man-to-man style of defense after being able to freelance frequently while playing zone with the Falcons. He had 17 interceptions in his four seasons in Atlanta, making the Pro Bowl in 2005 and ‘06. He had three interceptions this year, but frequently got beaten on big plays.

Hall got about $8 million of his contract for playing in eight games. But by releasing him now, the Raiders can use some of the money they planned to give Hall to try to keep Asomugha.

Oakland placed the franchise tag on Asomugha this year and would like to sign him to a long-term deal in the offseason.

In other moves, the Raiders placed safety Tyvon Branch (shoulder) and linebacker Robert Thomas (hamstring) on injured reserve with season-ending injuries. The Raiders signed defensive back Michael Waddell, who was released in training camp, and linebacker Marquis Cooper to contracts.

Man Hall is a good player.....Fuck those stats......we like some have said above need to waive Kelly, Walker and harris.....Why Hall????When you have the best cover corner in the league, of course more balls will come to the other side than usual.....He's going to New England and then to the pro bowl...He has 3 picks already....Hall is agressive......Iam going to the game this sunday with a brown bag over my head.......Boy will i be talking some shit....

I gotta disagree with u here homie, Hall is way overrated, and never has been the player he has hyped up to be, and it appears his time is way past done, Washington would have been better for the Raiders than Hall was,

Man Hall is a good player....

yeah right lol....him giving up those gawdy numbers isnt something new.....hes been doing that since atlanta

if you say "fuck those stats"

then what are some reasons you really feel that DHALL is a "good" player.....because other then Phil (and raiders fans) most people here knew EXACTLY what you were getting in HALL...not saying he deserved to be cut midseason but whatever....

Al Davis didnt even know what he was getting in D Hall....he expected a lot more because Hall made it to ProBowls on his name soley.....he was never even a semi-solid CB......WHOEVER thought other wise was joking themselves or simply didnt want him play.......end of story

he hasn't been as good as i hoped he would but the rest of our defense is playing like shit and he's the only one making some plays. yeah he's gotten burned a few times. well a lot but still. haha 3 picks. 1 fumble recovery. more take aways than any other member of our d. i am kind've glad we're trying to save some money and hopefully they'll finally lock up asomugha, but i would've expected walker, kelly, or harris to be first.

If I was Aso, or his agent, id advise him to get outta that bad situation
really though... I would too

I really hope Aso stays... but if he wants out I really can't blame him or be mad... he's a great player and doesn't deserve to lose as much as we do

although I did hear another Raiders fan saying he thinks we should trade Aso to fill in some holes because we could get a lot of value for him

I personally don't agree... because when you have a player like that you gotta hold on to him... especially since we would probably just use the trade to sign and overpay a bunch of people who aren't gonna do shit for us...

but yeah... somethin to at least think about
