Rapper Proof died early morning of Tuesday after being hit with the bullet in the head at a CCC club on Detroit’s on 8 Mile Road - the dividing line between Detroit’s inner-city neighbourhoods and its wealthier suburbs. According to the Police officials the gun firing at the Triple C nightclub began after an argument and that an unidentified man was also shot in the head but had survived.
Eight Mile Road- a high traffic and broad thoroughfare became prominent as it had been a setting for Eminem’s 2002 movie, "8 Mile" as well as his song 8 Mile Road. Proof also played a part in the film.
Officers said that when they reached at the triple C club, it was vacate and the victims were taken to the nearby hospital - St. John Conner Creek, an outpatient treatment facility that used to be a hospital, by private vehicles. Proof was pronounced dead on arrival and the second man, 35, remained in critical condition.
Officers also informed that an argument at the club escalated into gunshots. Stains of blood were on the street in front of the tavern, and police marked bullet coverings in a parking lot across the street. Patrol officers said that the bar has been a common source of troubles on the city’s east side. Since 1996 officers have reported 18 incidents including the recent vice raid in December in which six tickets were issued, most involving minors possessing or drinking alcohol.
Being the best friends - Proof and Eminem seldom were seen in public without each other. Proof was the best man at Eminem’s wedding in January. Although, he was famous as a friend to Eminem, he also had constant presence in the superstar’s life and work including a role in the Eminem music video "Like Toy Soldiers". Last year Proof had released his first solo album ’Searching for Jerry Garcia’, on his own label, Iron Fist Records.
Proof was a prominent member of the Detroit hip-hop collective D12 that included his friend Eminem and other rhymers and from which Eminem emerged to become the second bestselling rap artist in history after Tupac Shakur. Proof’s family members and friends gathered at a home on Detroit’s northwest side after hearing the news. Street was lined with the vehicles and people. As the seeding nightclub had no video surveillance system like other small bars, police is trying to collect evidences. Police Sgt. Eren Stephens Bell said that the investigation yielded witnesses but no suspects.
Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings said, "It’s kind of a messy affair, and we’re trying to sort it all out." Detectives don’t even know what Proof was doing at the bar, which was operating outside of its licensed hours.
