to the producers:

How did you start out? Did you just go out and buy a drum machine? I've been interested in becoming a producer for about 3 years but I don't have any tools yet (accept for a yamaha keyboard). I was wondering what you guys think I should buy first/research first.

Props in advance for a response.

I've been around music. One of my older brothers is a drum wizard, I have another that can play keys (he also rapped in the late 80's early 90's), and one of my sisters can play wind instruments. One of my brothers (who I am business partners with) decided we should do things ourselves. I was spending money at another studio, recording music, passing out stuff in the hood and to homies etc etc etc. The first piece of gear was this:

Right now I am looking at it as at it sits on my first keyboard workstation which was this:

What you purchase should be based on your playing style and what you plan on doing.

my step dad played keyboards for bands since i can remember and always thought that lifestyle was the coolest thing in the world. I ended up getting into rap music and was always intrigued on what they used to make those beats so i started doing research. I ended up getting reason and making stuff for fun and took it another step and went to audio engineering school. I'm still doing it for my own enjoyment though but one thing about this is you don't do it for the money cuz if you do it will never come.

The only tools a producer really needs (aside from a good team to work with) is a good ear & natural musical ability. Being creative doesn't hurt either. If you're interested in becoming a producer the very first thing you should do is learn what exactly a producer does & is responsible for. If all you're looking to do is make beats then that's something else and you should search the forum because there's tons of messages here already discussing that topic.
