My understanding is that Mr. Winslow was talking about so called DJ's that only use a macbook to play itunes shit. I've seen it done before at smaller bars and I want to just slap the shit out of them. Serato still requires you to use turn tables or the cd turn tables, I forgot what they're called. Whatever David Guetta uses.

if some djs sets weren't boring enough, having some quirky kid glued to a laptop screen occasionally clicking his touchpad is fucking terrible. i saw some kid up on stage for 20 minutes and as far as i saw, he made eye contact with the crowd maybe twice. i mean wtf? have some pride in what you do.

obviously with most things in life, its not what you have but how you use it. and what i've been seeing lately with lots of these younger djs are that they lack any originality and have no clue how to interact with the crowd. its a damn shame cause thats what being a dj is all about. i seriously wanna tell some of these cats that downloading pirated mp3s and having some generic samplekits of foghorns and lasers does not make you a dj.

ussually people just call em usb/midi controllers.

serato/ableton made it this way.
^The elite heavyweights. Notable mention: native instruments traktor scratch duo.

ableton live with a decent midi controller = so much fun.

alright see now im learning shit.

yeah basically when i see some dude staring at a laptop and like holding his headphones with one hand and moving around like he's doing something interesting but all im hearing is some mainstream hip pop song, i cant help but wonder what the hell he's doing aside from just clicking play and deciding what cliche "jam" to click play on next

these "mac book dj's" are dj's.
we just dont have to carry crates of vinyl around anymore.
its all on the laptop these days.
serato/ableton made it this way.

so when u see a dj staring at the laptop's playlist in between songs, imagine him thumbing thru vinyl in a crate.

LOL NO.
THIS DOESNT EXIST.
SERATO DOES HELP NOVICE DJ'S OUT BUT IT DOESNT FUCKING MIX FOR YOU AUTOMATICALLY LIKE SOME ANDROID DJ.
i knew you were just putting up a bad boy front with your earlier comment

Lol well if they are holding the headphones with one hand and moving the record on the other, they are most likely mixing in the next song and using the headphones to hear themselves and match the beats.

I think Grapes already covered the need for the macbook and what serato is...

lol yes. This does exist on serato. Its the feature that matches the bpms for you "Just in case your headphones break" where the wave forms match up for you fuckin idiot. Not necessarily mixing it for you. I went too far with what i said but you get the picture.

Novice DJs should learn the hard way with 2 gemini turntables, a radio shack mixer and a crate of records. I mean 12" singles. None of that wicked mix, lethal weapon, top secrets vinyls that help you out with a 8 bar intro and a break between 2 verses for clean mixes.

Fuckin 90s babies DJs.

Not knockin Serato. Everybody uses it. To Beat Junkies, ISP, Triple Threat, X-Men, Allies, etc etc.

LOL!!!

the laptop further alienates the dj.
so if you wasnt on that crowd contact shit before you REALLY aint on it now.

most dj's ive seen who spin have their whole sets all laid out in playlists pretty much so its almost like taking a test with a cheat sheet in your pocket.

its wonderful. shout to dj junk for showin me the ropes with all that

I normally tip once, on my final bathroom run at the bar... and nothing much maybe a dollar

and that macbook question ... is yes they're dj'ing... we live in a digital age now... people dont listen to music on tape cassettes and djs have started moving away from records. Many programs basically simulate a live turn table enviroment + being able to do way more effect wise.

really only djs that stick to records are enthusiast, and turntablist (the ones that scratch)

i use to have live turn tables... but ill stick to my: Torq being rewired into ableton anyday. I can midi control a drum machine, and with my controller's have many effect options. Granted my setup is way more then just a single laptop - just a laptop = boring dj

this was all layed off a laptop, all the shit infront is just basically midi controls

torq = just as good as serato

i hear ya but when have you ever seen a white or azn bathroom attendant? i was just being specific. and the term bathroom attendant wasnt in mind at the time. but i can honestly say in my personal experience that 100% of them have always been black or hispanic and over the age of 50.

thing is i like old black or hispanic dudes. a lot of times i prefer bars with them than with people my age. when i do tip these guys i like talking with them and letting them know i respect them. a lot of times they tend to be charismatic and sit there whistling nice tunes while your pissin and shit. i like that. thing is sometimes i dont have spare 1s in my pocket or need them for the bar and it makes me feel guilty not tipping them. but at the same time i feel like others have said...i could wash my hands and open the door myself...so why should i tip this geriatric bathroom butler?
