How do you feel about sampling. I'm hearing alot of tracks right now from the Bay Producers with alot of samples in it and it's starting to sound like the East Coast stuff. Do you think it's hurting us or helping us by using samples.

Wuddup BC. I personally don't even trip on samples. I feel that you got to get in "The Door" somehow, by any means necessary. Sometimes a sample can't be replayed cause of the equipment used back in the day or what have you. So, since my first album back in 1992-93 was based on heavy sampling, I came up with only an ensoniq mirage sampler and that's how I became like Mantronix at sampling. That's all I knew. Now I got mucho sound modules and handy musicians at my finger tips.....but I still love to sample and if anyone tells you different, fuck'em. I hear you when you say that alot of cats is doing what Kanye is doing and shit is sounding like east coast stuff, but in reality, east coast is sounding like down south and the east can't really define they're own sound anymore.......it's all meshing together like general population....Either way, as long as it's bangin and blappin, you can't lose. Good Luck to you and your musical endeavors. We gotta rep FF to tha fullest. Most producers either do one or the other
I know kats that can sample some dope shit but cant make a beat with there own keys for shit.
i think making a beat by hand shows alot more skills
Sampling beats is similar to DJ'n its all about matching BPM.

Hiphop Was based on sampling. The bay has always had sampled based beats. I cant remember a time when the bay didnt sample. Other than now and maybe the mid 90's and even then alot of sampling was going on. Sampled beats sound better to me, especially when chopped and done crazy. 9 times out of 10 I hate keyboard bay beats. They sound generic as hell the only producer who I feel with those beats is Rick Rock and Khyree. Everybody else sounds corny. Most cats cant play keyes and make these video game two finger melody's that sound like garbage. If a beat is hot its hot. Period. Sample or no sample

Not at all. To truley chop a simple and flip it it takes skills. If you just looping yeah then its easy. If you cant play keyes what good is a another two finger melody south rip off beat.

problem is most cats sample some corny ass shit that's already been sampled a million times

you should have a strong background in music to sample, i can hear a sample and be like "yo large professor flipped that on breakin atoms" or "pete rock used that on mecca and the soul brother"
if you can really dig for good samples keep em comin

sampling is only good if its done right.

I dont think it hurts anyone. Hip-hop started off of sampling. I aint mad at it.
Good music is good music...but we all need to step up our keyboard skills.

Gyeah what uppie pimp. I am more of the type to make original beats but I do use samples to make some of my beats. Difference is when I use samples mayne I try not to make it sound like the average sampled beats producers are making. I don't know if youve heard that in some of the productions I've done using samples but there are a few you probably wouldn't think were made from parts samples. There are some samples you cannot get around. I don't think it is hurting us making sample beats I think it can definatly help us especially if the beat is BLAPPIN..And alot of people love them sampled beats..so that is a plus. Most of my beats are Remy Originals though FA SHEZZZZYYY...

in my eyes, i think sampling is the easy way out...a producer who relies on his own melodies and ability to play instruments (usually the keybaord) proves far more skill than a producer who is continuously sampling

don't get me wrong though, samples are hot tho- but i think they get old fast

Thanks for the feedback on this ya'll, I'll be the first to admit I'll sameple shit if I feel can't be creative. When I get burned out from doing 5 to 8 beats a day and just can't be creative sometimes that's when I start looking for samples to work with. Thanks for the input.

Sampling is great.. You have to be able to use all options available to you and make the best of it.. I've made some tight beats using samples.. some have plain loops... and others have samples all chopped up and rearranged... you also should be able to mix together well, the non sampled isht with sampled isht..

I have examples of both on my site.. peep game..

i like vocal samples and sampled drum hits are fine too, but for instrumentation, i like running analog keyboards into digital effects.

if you wanna sound like a generic mobb music producer, use a triton or a motif. if you wanna sound droop-E hyphy, use fruity loops. if you wanna sound dope learn some fucking advanced music theory and create polyrhythmic structures in your beats.

Samples

I think that Sampling is cool if its done right. It does have to be creative where it don't just sound like u looped a piece of a song and ran it over and over. Any average beat maker can steal some body elses hit and rap or sing over it. I can't really give a beat maker skill points for taking somebody elses hit and speeding it up or changing the pitch.

First off, I do both. I rock out on the keys if I'm in the mood for that...or bust out flipping samples if I'm in the mood for that.

Secondly, lotta people saying sampling is coo if it is done right, but what I say is any beat is coo if it is done right. So many Bay "producers" think they're Triton beats are the shit, but they sound like playskool doo doo. On the other hand, so many jackasses think they "produce" hiphop cuz they looped a played out sample and added some weak ass drums. There is good and bad with both, simple as that!

The main misconception with sampling is that many people don't know how to do it properly. Finding a corny, played out loop...and then adding drums is doing an injustice to everyone. People need to quit Diddy looping their shit! The average fan/person and many "producers" do not understand (nor can they execute) the concept of chopping a sample, then rearranging and layering it to your tastes. To say sampling is a cop out is unfair...tell that to someone like DJ Premier, someone who meticulously chops specific sounds and phrases and composes totally NEW music out of it. Lots of "producers" just don't know how to flip a sample and create something new out of it. On top of that, muh fuckas don't know how to utilize filters, oscilators, envelopes, effects, etc etc...

I mean with the synth beats...you got people with no musical ear whatsoever making what they think is tight. Too many toys pressing down on keys with they vienna sausage fingers, generating a whole lotta noise and not enough music. Then, like I mentioned before, there's the busters with their MPCs and generic ass loops.

I don't care if someone samples or someone makes synth beats, just make sure your shit sounds tight. I appreciate good music, and I hope most people do too. I can get down to a DJ Quick beat just as much as I can get down to a DJ Premier beat. (And I don't care what anyone says, making a beat from scratch is way harder...but at the same time, don't think just beacause you do that, you are good.)
