Ya I almost forgot - I've been wondering if there was any way to save a movie like as in, avi or mpeg from your dvd drive in your computer....ya know, saving a movie straight from dvd disc to your hard drive)?
Not straight from DVD to MPG without conversion. You'll need a DVD ripper (DVD Shrink/DVD Decrypter are good) to rip the VOBs from the DVD then you'll need a conversion tool (Super is great) to create MPG/QuickTime/AVI/WMV/etc from them. Unless you want just to watch on your computer you can leave them as VOBs and use WinDVD or another DVD player to watch.
No prob, I've used PCs/Macs for close to 20 years and built several custom PCs myself. I also been a designer since '98 so feel free to PM me if you have any tech questions. I try to shoot you an answer if I know it.
Yes and no. The size and bitrate control overall quality. The bigger the size/higher the KBPS/or bitrate the higher the quality. Think of the size as how big the frame or window will be and bitrate as the pipe delivering the data. 320x240 is a good medium video size. 720x480 is the standard NTSC DVD size. Just remember the larger the video size and bitrate the longer it will take to encode. Heres a good online DVD/SVCD/DivX bitrate calculator.
Also Super will allow you to convert to/from just about any video format you'll find on the net. Plus its free. It even supports iPod/PSP and mobile phone format videos.
I had a computer at the house growing starting in the mid '80's and have been repairing and building them myself since '97. Got out of graphic design school in '99 and have been freelancing or working for companies since.
Encoding video is extremely CPU dependent. The faster your CPU the faster the encoding will take. The video size, length, bitrate and codec will also affect how long it takes to encode.
